36(painter) looking to change trades. Has anyone just applied to multiple apprenticeships and see which one sticks?

r/

I know I want to be in a union, just not sure which one exactly. Having been a blue collar guy most of my working life, I feel like staying in that field is a more feasible pivot for me at this stage of my life, with a family, mortgage etc.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s done this, or knows someone who has, and how it worked out

Have you considered making a switch to public service? I work for municipality and our Public Works Department really values guys who come from trades backgrounds. We participate in the State’s retirement system, which is set up so anyone can earn full retirement regardless of what point you enter the system. While starting pay might be a little lower to start with, our guys are encouraged to pursue advancement (CDL, certs, etc) and are rewarded each time they “level up”. There are other benefits to public service, like tons of time off, consistent schedule, and at least for us, we get regular inflation bonuses.

Once you start exploring public service jobs, you would be surprised how much is out there. I am in a rural area, yet within a reasonable commute are jobs with 5 municipalities, 2 counties, the State, 2 Tribes, a state park, a national park, and the forest service.
