I apologize for posting this here for visibility because AskMenOver60 only has 400 members. My dad is 61 years old and has recently told me that he has to get up and pee 3-4 times throughout the night, wretchedly disrupting his sleep. He also mentions suffering from erectile disfuction and an overall decline in sexual satisfaction.
My question is:
-
Is this something naturally occuring once men hit this age, or is this of concern?
-
If it’s not noramal, is there any supplement can help, perhaps something that boosts testosterone or prostate health?
-
Does this require a doctor appointment and medication to alleviate the problem?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Prostate. Very common.
He needs to be a big boy and see a urologist
He should go to the doctor. Both of his problems are treatable, and both can sometimes be warning signs for serious health issues.
There are meds for this as well as surgery for the prostate. He should talk to his doctor about it.
He needs to address his concerns to his doctor. I’m 62 and get up once, usually, in the middle of the night to pee. Which isn’t a concern for me.
Make an appointment with a urologist. This is all above reddit’s pay grade.
He is very much in need of a urology appointment. He needs an exam, and his PSA tested.
He needs to see a doctor. PCP first for some preliminary labs and prostate exam (ole finger in the butt).
This is likely benign prostatic hypertrophy, but there are other more sinister diagnosed that need to be checked on too.
Finasteride is the go-to medication that will help with urinary outflow obstruction due to prostate hypertrophy (enlargement). His PCP will probably get a PSA, start him on finasteride and get him in to see urologist
L.
This is the most common and treatable problem at that age. Doesn’t even need a urologist just go see the pcp
Prostate. Quite common. There are some treatments. Go see a urologist.
Time to see a urologist.
And there’s a significant chance that the cause(s)–which may not be prostate related, at all– is/are treatable, comfortably and with little disruption.
I know this from experience.
Not naturally occurring. It occurs to many but it’s often the result of lifestyle.
It can be also related to illness of course but more often than not it’s about being too sedentary, bad diet, excessive stress, lack of proper sleep, being overweight (even just belly fat etc).
It can be also hormonal related but it’s not one way – behavior can affect hormonal production as much as the other way around in a healthy person.
Obviously seeing a doctor to make sure it’s important just to be on the safe side.
(not a man, but a nurse). Yes, extremely common. It’s likely his prostate being enlarged, which is normal for his age. It makes it difficult to fully empty the bladder and the stream is also less strong, so he has to pee more often. There are some medications that are supposed to help dilate the vessels to make peeing easier and more fruitful. There are also procedures to widen the area that have been tightened by the prostate.
But first he needs to see his family MD. He needs a prostate exam. He needs a PSA level, as any man his age, which helps screen for prostate cancer. Then he can get referred to a urologist. He can talk to his doctor about his erections. Testosterone can help a little probably.
Doctor time. It’s kind of amazing that he doesn’t already have a well established relationship with a doc.
Does he drink? That’ll do a number on erectile health and cause lots of trips to pee. It could be just his prostate. It could be a combination of factors or something else entirely.
This seems to be a combination of age, coupled with medical problems that requires a doctor’s intervention.
So instead of playing the holistic method to fixing things, he talk to his doctor and a urologist about this instead.
Whether it’s a normal occurrence I’m not 100% sure but there are two things that I take to alleviate or even prevent this myself – nutriferon and lumbrokinase. There may be other things going on so checking with a doctor is always a good thing afaik. The doctor who suggested nutriferon works outside the allopathic system though.
Has he gone for a prostate exam yet? Iirc men over 50 should have their prostate checked every few years.
Are you asking here BECAUSE you dont have access to a family doctor? Or is your dad the type that “doesnt go to the doctor because if they do the doctor will tell them theres something wrong”?
If hes getting up 4 times through the night, obviously somethings up
Could be UTI. Eat more meat and exercise more.
Prostate starts growing again and causes all sorts of symptoms like this. See the PCP and possibly urology depending in how severe
Time to see the urologist.
Very likely an enlarged prostate is causing the need to get up several times to pee. He should be having regular PSA tests. The enlarged prostate can be benign or in rarer cases a sign of prostate cancer, which is highly treatable if discovered relatively early. Definitely get him to a urologist asap.
Some older folks deprive themselves of water and liquids after dinner, as a way of not having to get up so often in the night. This can lead to dangerous levels of dehydration. Talk to him about that too. It is better to get up 4 times than to do harm to your body in multiple ways from dehydration.
The urologist can also address the erection trouble, which is normal with age but — again — could be a symptom of a larger issue. Does he have high cholesterol? Does he regularly have bloodwork done to check on things like PSA levels and cholesterol levels? Plaque in the arteries can lead to stroke.
The blood vessels that carry blood to and from the penis (and thus allowing boners) are much smaller (narrower) than those carrying blood to organs like the brain and heart, so if he has plaque clogging his arteries, it could manifest itself first as erectile disfunction. It will show up first where the arteries are the narrowest, in many cases. A lot of people have 70% and 80% blockages in larger arteries like the carotid arteries that carry blood to the brain and never know it — but they have probably been ignoring signs elsewhere with smaller blood vessels (like ED).
That’s just one possibility (ED can be from many things), but all the more reason to see the right doctor.
And caution him not to just look for a doc who freely prescribes boner pills. He needs to investigate the cause of his problems, not just treat the symptoms. There’s nothing wrong with Viagra, Cialis or whatever to treat the symptom, but if he has an underlying more serious issue causing the ED, it needs to be addressed too, before it matures into a worse problem like heart disease or stroke.
I would agree with see a urologist, but ask about the role of the pelvic floor, especially with all those related symptoms. Pelvic floor disfunction can cause all of that and many urologists are ignorant about it.
With your father’s ED, has he tried the usual pills? Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra? If these dont work, he will need to see a urologist. There are other medicines that a urologist can prescribe, such as a urethra gel, penile injections, and a penile prosthetic.
This is def a doctor’s visit issue, not sure if you are in the US so this might be expensive?
I have similar issues but mine are tied to my weight & age. No prostate issue etc. My doctor was able to advise me easily enough.
There are other issues that can present in a similar fashion and again a doctor would be able to help advise on the best path to treatment if necessary.
Don’t listen to the people saying “It’s very likely …” or “don’t worry” have him go see a doctor and find out for sure. Internet medical advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.
This is going to take a doctor or 2 to fix. I have the same basic issues as your dad. I am 61 and I take 20 mg Cialis 1x/day and it helps with having to urinate as much and helps with urge incontinence. That takes a doctor script and they should start him at probably 5 mg.
The Cialis should also help with his ED issue.
Testosterone generally isn’t going to help with ED except that it usually boosts libido so he might want it more.
Don’t be surprised to have to deal with a urologist, and endocrinologist, and your general practitioner.
Tell Dad there’s hope! Best of luck to him!
I used to have the same issue. Once I stopped drinking green tea and water after 7pm the problem disappeared. Sexual satisfaction maybe a little more complicated. Chat with doctor wouldn’t hurt.
Happened to my father a lot. He said 5-10 mg edibles got him through it. Was finally able to sleep through the night. So it’s worth a shot
Your dad should either goto a new doctor (if the current one doesn’t see the issue as an issue), or a specialist.
To the urologist ASAP. Caught my prostate cancer early so life is tolerable. The experience was less than fun, so I would surmise that treatment for more advanced cases is even worse.
As a 56 year old male I have very similar symptoms to your dad, I don’t suffer from ed but there is certainly a difference. I also never get random erections now, it still works when needed so fingers crossed.
As for getting up during the night my Dr asked me to keep a record and over 2 months I was up an average of 5.4 times a night. My GP told me my prostate was fine but I still decided to see a urologist, his first option was medication that slightly reduced the night time visits to about 3 or 4 a night but gave me severe cramps. After coming off the meds It was suggested I have my prostate shrunk using REZUM as this procedure has less side effects, I had that with very little difference apart from the fact I can’t ejaculate any more. I’ve quit caffeine don’t drink alcohol for months at a time, I exercise by running and cycling a few times a week, and during the winter I do gym work so very active, I don’t drink after 6pm and still up 4 times a night.
Like so many people said he should see a doctor for this.
Most likely an enlarged prostate.
My dad had the same issue but he was on time with it and could be treated with meds.
you guys must live under a rock because this is like one of the biggest commercials for pharmaceuticals and prostate health they play. Go see a doctor while some of these things are “normal “they’re easily fixed
