70’s kids, teens, young adults – how do you feel about Gen Z adopting mullets, pornstaches, middle-parts and flared jeans?

r/

Asking as a 22yr, how do those of you who lived through the 70’s feel about certain trends coming back in style?

Thanks yo Benson Boone, most guys my age have permed mullets and moustaches. Middle-parts, flared low rise jeans, perms and even bushes are having a renaissance. It must be hilarious 😂

To each their own of course.

it’s not me, it wasn’t back then, never was, isn’t me today etc.

But for those who like it, rock on.

  3. swrrrrg Avatar

I didn’t live through the 70s, but we wore flared jeans (and bell bottoms) in the 90s. I also remember some kids having mullets, although by that time I seem to recall they were thought of as ‘white trash.’ Trends are just being recycled again. I’m sure they’ll look back and cringe at their photos. Personally, I think this is an ugly period for a lot of trendy people.

    Wear whatever you like!

  5. ActiveOldster Avatar

Everything seems to come in 50 year cycles. Saw a double breasted jacket in a men’s clothes shop the other day! Im 70m and haven’t worn anything double breasted since 1973!! So it goes!

  6. sapotts61 Avatar

Styles come and go. The only real change is the materials involved.

  7. Flashy_Woodpecker_11 Avatar

The fashion is similar as in the 70’s, but the vibe is not. if that makes sense

  8. Marrow-Sun7726 Avatar

Mullets have always looked like shit, I don’t know why anyone gets that haircut on purpose.

  9. Bert-63 Avatar

Born in the 60s – do what suits ya. Take or leave whatever you want. Who am I to judge?

  10. vodeodeo55 Avatar

I love my grandson, really and truly, but a mullet would be SO much better than the silly broccoli haircut he’s been sporting.

  11. intrigue-bliss4331 Avatar

It’s kind of entertaining. I have a rule for myself that if I wore a trend in one decade, I don’t get to wear it when it comes back around, and boy have I seen a bunch of familiar-looking clothes in the past couple of years. But as someone said, though the style looks similar, the attitude they are wearing it with is totally different.

  12. Gun5linger67 Avatar

GenX here. I LOVE it! Add in some Ponchos and Knee High sports socks for guys and you are officially Old School Cool!

A rock band 3/4 length sleeve t-shirt and Blue Jean jacket for EXTRA POINTS!

They look just as ugly as people did in the 70s.

Everything old is new again. It has always been that way. If it makes someone happy, then who are we to care if it’s an old fad or new

  19. ErinClaymores Avatar

Feel old to see them come back again and still just as bad! I’d say the current men’s hair trends are more 80s – mullets & perms were popular on Australian TV shows like ‘Neighbours’ and people like Jason Donovan, Pat Sharpe, Gaz Top. Also remember friends having extreme fades and “bowlhead” cuts too. Middle-parts AKA “curtains” and flares were big in the late 80s/early 90s tied in with early “Madchester” music & club scene. Happy daze!!

  20. Wonderful_Horror7315 Avatar

I was a kid in the 70s and wore those things in my 20s when they came back in style in the 90s. I love seeing it all come back again! I love the vintage clothing sub and the 70s styles are my favorites.

  21. moverene1914 Avatar

When I was a teen in the 70s at one point, my mom pointed out to me that lots of our styles were from the 40s when she was young. She was right! Personally, I don’t care who wears what or when.

I think it’s freaking hilarious.  “We hate boomers, but we totally want to be them.”  As a Gen Xer with older brothers and sisters and solid memories of from about 1974 on, it just makes me giggle.

  26. JustAnOkDogMom Avatar

Idgaf. I’m too busy with my own life and job to worry about what some stranger is wearing.

  27. tfcocs Avatar

I turned 13 in 1979. I was aghast at the polyester tackiness at the time. Bell bottoms were a pain to wear if one was short. Except for the hair the 80s were better.

  28. Junior_Lavishness_96 Avatar

I haven’t noticed it. But I do remember in the 90s there was definitely a retro style supposed to be 70s style. I was a little kid in the 70s and clothes styles and trend are very vague memories. Other things I definitely remember are music, cars, being bored to death sitting in the car in line at the gas station lol

  29. nevadapirate Avatar

I could not give less of a shit what they wear or how they style their hair. If it makes them happy have fun.

  30. Extra_Engineering996 Avatar

    Had a mullet last year..

I shave my head so no middle part

    flared jeans are fine.

    Fashion always comes around again.

  31. goosebumpsagain Avatar

Whatever makes them happy. Kids get to build their tribal rituals. In other words, I’m not getting a mullet but wont disparage theirs. Rock on.

  32. Dull-Geologist-8204 Avatar

I didn’t grow up in the 70’s but in the 80’s some of that was still around and in the 90’s some of it was recycled. I could care less wear what you want. Recycling trends is more normal then you think.

Kids just want to do whatever the opposite is of what their parents did simply because their parents did it. That has been going on since forever.

  33. rogun64 Avatar

It depends on which one you’re talking about, but I’m often conflicted about why young people would want to repeat our mistakes. At least sometimes, there were very good reasons why we quit doing something, like wear itchy and hot polyester. I’ve noticed that young people have begun to recognize that mistake themselves, but it took them several years to do it.

Flared jeans have come and gone multiple times, but they never stick around for long. I think there are other examples of this, but I can’t think of any right now.

AFAIK, the “mullet” label was created to make fun of people who sported a mullet, so it’s interesting how it’s now fashionable? I will give young people credit for being creative, although they lack originality and basic rules for dressing well.

If you truly want to be a trendsetter, wear whatever is out of style now, because it’ll be the next big thing. The fashion industry probably spends a fortune making things unpopular, so they can usher them back into style soon (after they’ve convinced you to get rid of them, of course). Everything comes and goes, so I get a kick out of reading fashion subs on Reddit, and watching yesterday’s most hated item, become tomorrow’s next big thing. It’s usually not even done ironically.

  34. Unashamed_Outrage Avatar

Mullets and pornstaches were never cool and I’m sad they are being adopted by Gen Z, the poor misguided souls.

Flared jeans…meh. They are really only good for certain body types and hardly any Gen Z could actually pull off the swagger like that of the 70s. Will seriously look like posers.

  35. cmille3 Avatar

You do you, bud. Rock what you love.

Go for it! Don’t forget the Cleopatra eyeliner.

  38. WellWellWellthennow Avatar

Loved it then and loved it now, but the commenter who said the vibe wasn’t right is correct. It’s missing all of that cigarette smoke and hopefulness.

  39. notthatcousingreg Avatar

I love seeing them embrace anything other than the normcore beige stuff that has 0 style. I cant wait until they see videos of themselves in 30 years.

  40. RedditSkippy Avatar

The stashes are great—they remind me of all the men when I was younger.

The other thing that’s come back are all the early 80s eyeglass frames. I saw a guy walking around recently wearing glasses like I remember my grandfather had in the early 80s.

  41. Beginning_Local3111 Avatar

As long as they don’t snort as much coke we’ll survive.

  42. Small_Pleasures Avatar

My husband and I really dislike our 27 year old’s pornstache and his fascy haircut (he’s in the military reserve so the haircut is related to that). Looks great with a beard/stache combo or bare faced. Hair is best just before he gets it cut before drill weekends.

His gf likes that look so he has all the incentive to not change a thing. Looking forward to this stage being over.

  45. MooseMalloy Avatar

    I don’t really care what they do… and I’m sure it’s mutual.

  47. shackbleep Avatar

I’m looking forward to you all seeing pictures of yourselves someday and realizing that you looked like complete assholes.

Happens to us all. Don’t sweat it. Fashion is stupid.

  48. rickylancaster Avatar

It’s all fine and good but we really need to outlaw handlebar mustaches, and for the love of all that is good and pure when did MAGA become synonymous with long, unkempt looking “Amish” beards? I swear in the last 3 years or so, the rise of MAGA bros presenting like they’re cosplaying Amish is disturbing.

  49. carmineragu Avatar

70s kids rolled their eyes at 50s greasers 90s mocked the 70s now gen z is basically cosplaying their grandparents

fashion’s just a pendulum nobody’s original we just remix until it feels new again
the real joke is thinking your mullet is edgy when it’s literally your dad’s yearbook pic

  59. AndOneForMahler- Avatar

It isn’t truly ’70s until Landlubber starts making jeans again (bellbottoms).

  60. GodeaterTheHalFeral Avatar

Old styles often come back into fashion.

  61. PurpleSailor Avatar

Fashion always seems to come around again styled just a little different than the last go around. I’d love to be able to wear low-rise flared jeans again but this would be the third time so I’ll stick to my Mom jeans. Be fashionable if you want to be and enjoy it while you can.

  62. FrostnJack Avatar

You do you, Zs. I’ll be over there giggling. But in an affirming way.

  63. No_Rain_1543 Avatar

Don’t care. Kids/teens always dress/style to fit in with what’s cool at the time no matter what generation we’re talking about

Saying this, I probably dress now like my grandad did then. Comfortable loose jeans, cardigan, etc. Only things I’m missing is the hair cream and pipe 😂

  64. Plow_King Avatar

i couldn’t care less. i’m more concerned with their voting habits than their fashion.

  65. mightyopinionated Avatar

Ah let them have fun too bad their music can be similar to ours

  66. Tessamari Avatar

I am too busy minding my own business to notice younger fads.

  67. PsychologicalBat1425 Avatar

Whatever. They can dress how ever they want but they will never be able to recapture the 1970s. That was a different time and Gen Z really won’t understand how the Vietnam War, rise of the counter culture, and the social justice issues of the time. That is what made the 1970s.

  68. Girl_Power55 Avatar

Oh god, the pornstache. Those make attractive guys look the worst.

  69. k3rd Avatar

No problem at all. Each their own.

  70. trumpeting_in_corrid Avatar

    I could not care less.

  71. Lobin Avatar

The mullets and mustaches are atrocious. So effing ugly.

  72. Current_Poster Avatar

Okay, fair, not what I thought The Year 2025 would look like, but whatever. 😉

  73. cellardooorr Avatar

The funniest part of any fashion coming back is that the current youngsters always think they’ve just invented it. That it’s this amazing “new” style. They’re so proud of being so edgy and unique with their mullets, mustaches and crop tops etc. And they’re so serious about it!

Like, girl, you’re wearing what I used to wear in the 90s 🤷🏻‍♀️

  74. dragongrl Avatar

If Gen Z wants to cosplay the 70’s, who cares?

  75. Low-Slide4516 Avatar

I’m just sorry I didn’t save ALL of my fashion from the 70’s!

  76. Velvet_Samurai Avatar

I mean, I wore shit right out of my dad’s closet in the 90’s. Would be hypocritical to say a damn thing now.

  77. Chance-Business Avatar

I hadn’t noticed but that’s fine. There’s only so many things a person can do with their hair and fashion, things will come back eventually.

At this point we’ve actually seen very many fashions return multiple times, so actually it just isn’t a huge surprise by a certain age.

  78. Flippin_diabolical Avatar

I didn’t like mullets the first time around but to each their own.

  79. Taracat Avatar

I don’t care. I did what I wanted at their age and now it’s their turn.

  80. love2Bsingle Avatar

Lawd I can’t stand the pornstaches. I hated them in the 70s and I hate them now

  81. largos7289 Avatar

The mullet OK the porn stashes… LOL they should just never come back into style

  82. Shadesmith01 Avatar

    Eh, its a look.

I’m a jeans and t-shirts, or more accurately now, basketball shorts and t-shirts kind of guy. I buzz my head because I’ve got a bald spot, and I shave the crags that are called my face maybe once a week; otherwise, I’ve sported a full goatee since I was about 20 (54 now, yeah, so old and ugly, no wonder I’m single, lol).

Who the fuck am I to talk about someone else’s fashion sense?

Oh, and I’m colorblind, so my wardrobe consists of black, dark blue, charcoal, and white. Why? Because I can fucking see what colors I’m wearing then. lol

  83. nakedonmygoat Avatar

I don’t know why they’d choose some of the worst styles to emulate, but why should today’s old people have all the fun of cringing at their youthful photos? Let today’s young people grow up to cringe at their hair and fashion choices, too!

  84. beachpause Avatar

It’s funny to me when they make it seem like they invented it somehow instead of acknowledging that it’s an old retro trend that we created in the 70s.

  85. HumbleExplanation13 Avatar

Well I lived thru the 60’s fashion revival in the 80’a too so none of this is surprising, but it’s a shame the youngs don’t understand what they’re mimicking, and the things you listed are actually callbacks to multiple decades. Mullets were 80’s, bell bottoms 60’s.

  86. booksycat Avatar

I honestly don’t care. Every generation takes what they romanticize from before.

BUUUTTTTTT… it’s all the posts and articles acting like they invented stuff that has me rolling my eyes.

Last week it was “genz invents eating at 6pm” – so… dinner, genz invented dinner? LOL

  87. Halcyon512 Avatar

It was bad fashion then and is bad fashion today but everybody goes thru those stages. I remember in the mid 80s, 50’s style came back around and in the 90s, the 60s came back. It’s all cyclical.

  88. markevens Avatar

This happens to trends all the time, I don’t really concern myself with it at all.

  89. sonia72quebec Avatar

It’s weird to me. I’m having flashbacks of my high school years but at the same time it’s not exactly the same.

  90. JanetInSpain Avatar

Everything goes around. Old styles come back. Unfortunately Gen Z will never have the chutzpa and out-loud living that we did in the 70s. They can wear the styles but they’re never going to be as cool.

  91. LordOfEltingville Avatar

Every generation deserves the chance to make fashion choices that they’ll look back at some day and wonder, “WTF was I thinking?!?”

  92. Timely-Youth-9074 Avatar

Rest assured, they will learn to hate it, just like the Millennials did in the 2000’s, and skinny jeans will be back (they never left).

  93. gmanose Avatar

Now I see how ugly they were

  94. Wyshunu Avatar

Have you never heard the old saying “There’s nothing new under the sun”?

  95. Violent_Gore Avatar

Well I was an 80’s kid/90’s teen and for the 00’s on for a bit those things on younger people (mostly millennials) were signs of insufferable hipsterism, but now with the even younger generation they’re taking on a whole new life of it’s own that’s neither good nor bad I don’t think, just things coming around full circle.

  96. tuenthe463 Avatar

I am 51. Two weeks ago at an MLB game I told a millennial to knock it off. All game he was singing /shouting “KILL YOURSELF” at the other team and Id had enough. He was sitting next to my buddy’s 12 y/o daughter). He tried to puff up his chest and confront me but his friends calmed him down and he left. Anyway, I’m guessing he was 28-30 and his outfit included: striped pulled up tube socks, digital gold Casio watch, forest Gump Nike sneakers, pornstache, little girls/kid’s beaded bracelet with the name of one of our backups/utility infielder (was also wearing this player’s jersey). He was also taking photos of his friends with like a 1998 Fuji digital camera. So much douche on one man.

  97. GrumpySnarf Avatar

Oh my fucking GOD stop with the mullets, kids. I’m fine with curly or bushy hair but perms are kind of lame for any gender, IMO. The chemicals STINK and the grow-out is trashy looking.

I like flared pants as long as it’s not ridiculous like JNCOs. They are better than those hideous baggy-assed joggers that have been the style for a while now.

  98. danathepaina Avatar

I’m just waiting for scrunchie socks on the outside of your tapered jeans to come back in style.

  99. Jadubya405 Avatar

The ogs looked like fkn idiots …..but the “retro” crew is 100x worse. Comically bad.
