AITA for replacing my roommate’s “natural” soap with regular soap because she kept stealing mine?

r/

I (26F) live with a roommate (24F) who’s super into “natural living.” Think crystals, moon water, and soap made from goat milk and vibes. I respect her lifestyle until she started stealing my stuff.

I noticed my expensive body wash kept disappearing. I confronted her, and she said she felt drawn to it and that sharing is part of communal harmony. I told her to stop. She didn’t.

So I got petty. I bought a bottle of regular drugstore soap, poured it into my fancy bottle, and waited. Two days later, she complained her skin felt off and asked if Mercury was in retrograde. I said maybe it was the soap spirits punishing her.

Now she’s mad and says I “violated her trust.” I say she violated my body wash. AITA for swapping the soap?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

    > I replaced my fancy body wash with regular soap because my roommate kept stealing it, even after I asked her to stop. She later used it, noticed a difference, and got upset. I might be the asshole because instead of confronting her again or finding a peaceful solution, I chose petty revenge. My action directly affected her, and she feels I violated her trust—even though she was the one using my stuff without permission. I understand that tricking her might have escalated the conflict unnecessarily.

INFO: in the title, you “replaced my roommate’s soap”, but in the body it is your body wash bottle that you filled with cheap soap.

If you messed with her soap bottle, then, yes, YTA. If it is your own bottle she helps herself without permission, then NTA.

  7. OldBoyShenanigans Avatar

No, NTA. You told her to stop, she didn’t. You can’t go paying for stuff for her to use.

  8. MolassesInevitable53 Avatar

She needs to be told that stealing creates communal disharmony.

NTA, and I’m going to be lmao for a while about “soap spirits.”

    NTA.

If you didn’t have your revenge already, you could have stolen her boyfriend/girlfriend and use the same excuse; “I was drawn to them”. 🤣🤣🤣

NTA. I would have put something a lot worse than regular soap in the bottle. She got off lightly.

You didn’t violate her trust she violated yours. She also crossed your clearly stated boundaries and created “disharmony” herself. She’s a disrespectful hypocrite and thief.

NTA, she wants it, she can buy her own.

“You violated my trust when you took harmless but effective measures to stop me stealing from you. You are so far out of line it isn’t funny! Make it so I can keep stealing from you!!”

On the spiritual community we call this karma for not Asking And just taking. She got it back three fold.

At what point did you replace her soap?

  22. simonannitsford Avatar

Violated her trust. What trust? You can’t trust her to not steal your things.

  23. CrazyTomatoLady86 Avatar

You should say ” well you must have been drawn to the cheap nasty soap as well then”. Lol! She is stealing your stuff so you’re definitely NTA. I think you will need to keep all your products in your room and locked away if possible from now on because you know she will take it even though you’ve asked her not too. She’s a bad room mate. Hope you’re not stuck with her too long.

    YTA for this lazy story.

NTA. Actions have consequences. Yes what you did was petty, but she technically took something that didn’t belong to her without asking. Lifestyle choice or not, she could have at least asked first instead of assuming it was fine because “communal harmony” which is a ridiculous excuse for steal to begin with. I did chuckle at “violated my body wash”, even though you did it to her to be petty, but still funny. Well done, haha.
