I’m a 40-something year old man, and I have not been able to make much time for friends for the past decade due to kids, wife not being supportive, etc. I’m trying to get back into spending time with my old friends, but honestly I’m not sure what to suggest that we do together. I don’t play or watch sports, and I don’t really drink (like no more than one drink).
I started thinking about this after my wife met up with a friend this weekend. They went out for coffee and then wandered around a shopping area. I’m not sure what the guy equivalent is though.
It was easy either in college or shortly after when I was living with a bunch of my friends, there were always people around to hang out with. We mostly played video games back then.
I feel pretty out of practice at socializing, so some sort of actual activity seems like a good way to ease back into it. But I really have no idea what guy my age actually do together.

Me and my friends will meet up, go for a meal, chill and talk about life
All my friend activities revolve around motorcycles, cigars, and whiskey.
Make fire. Grill meat.
Me and my buddies get together every week during the summer months to shoot long range. I also hunt with another buddy. Sometimes we get together and canoe/camp. Just a couple examples for me
Board games
Hiking
Grill out or otherwise cook for each other
Order pizza, break out a deck of cards, and sit around my dining room table shooting the shit
I usually just talk and eat food with them, go out shopping or rockhounding. That’s about all we do when we find a day where everyone’s schedules align
You could still play video games or you could find a new hobby. Any hobby two or more people are interested in would work.
Golf, fishing, video games, non-electronic games, hiking, lifting, running, working on cars, brewing beer, it really doesn’t matter. Just pick something you enjoy.
Play dungeons and dragons
Play video games, drink a few beers, talk about life. Same friend stuff from before having children.
We mostly have a smoke and play some card games
Mate you can grab a coffee then walk around too
Talk, workout, eat, compete
Play guitar, sports, or just talk
Talk, chill, eat and play video/board games
Adult men who want to hang out with no plan for activities freak me out. If we’re not doing anything, I want peace.

— Do you and your buddies golf? Bingo. 5 hours of guy time plus drinks and a meal. Lovely weekend.
— Don’t golf? Try any of these approachable sports that you can get equipment for 2 or 4 for less than $100: Cornhole. Bocce. Disc golf. Pickleball. Mini golf. Bowling.
— Physical activity doesn’t make your heart sing? Get a board game and have friends over to play it. Teach yourself how to play (YouTube) first so you can reach them.
— Got a grill? Get some meat. Are you guys friends vegan? Get other guy friends to augment.
Edit: I love shopping with my wife because it is about her…but I HATE shopping with dude friends. I don’t care what they’re buying and I certainly don’t want to wait while they piddlefuck around at Macy’s when I want to go to Radio Shack. I don’t know how women do it successfully.
You have to start with finding interests and the friends will come. I recently picked up golf because I’m in the military and I know golf will always be there no matter where they send me and there will always be people to play golf with. Not saying that’s the answer for you but once you figure out what you like/want to do you’ll find people to do it with.

Grab or make bbq, watch a show, grab a bev, and maybe cigars
I went through this, and so decided to start going to meetups around my interests (kayaking, hiking, camping, backpacking, etc). I met friends that way and we have a built in common interest, something we can do together (though we often do other things together as well).
Drink, complain, joke around, etc
vacation together, make food, drink, watch ufc, play video games, gun range, drag strip, car shows, play cards, going to the gym, working on cars etc
I don’t hang out too much, but when I do it is usually watching or playing a sport. Car stuff is fun too – if it’s a midday might hit up the scrap yard, detail our cars together, go to a dealership and test drive cars for fun, or a garage sale find cool stuff. Sometimes it’s just sitting around , shooting the shit with some dominoes or cards too.
