Everytime I get high, I get a bad trip. How to fix this ?

I have recently started šŸ» and šŸƒ. And everytime I get high, I get a bad trip. There hasn’t even been a single good trip for me. And I’ve done it atleast 15 times and I’m 22 years old (m).

When I get high, all my traumas, fears, things I’m ashamed of and past memories crowd my head. I don’t have many good memories. My childhood was spent indoors and lonely.

I had no close friend or contact with the extended family. Struggles with self-esteem, self-worth, my sexuality, my masculinity, body dismorphia are some of my problems.

I wanted to know is there some way to fix this ?

Also, is there someone who went through this as well ?

    Have you considered, and hear me out here because it is radical, not doing drugs anymore?

    Not all drugs affect all people the same way all the time. You might be someone who should just avoid doing drugs because they don’t do anything positive for you.

    Marijuana brings on anxiety in a lot of people so know that you’re not alone here. Unfortunetly there isn’t a lot you can do about it, it’s just the way your brain reacts to the THC. You could look for strains that have very low THC percentage, any good dispensaries will be able to help you here. Everything is so potent these days it’s hard to find something under 20%

    Otherwise, find the strain that works best, and don’t smoke so much! 3 puffs and go from there

    Thats just paranoia and guilt because society says you should feel guilty. Be aware that you are ruminating which is not healthy. Go outside and enjoy mother nature (while partaking.) Meditate and think about the future and what you want to do, where you want to go. The worst thing you can do is get high and think about the past. That leads to a rabbit hole of misery that no one wants to go down.

    Hey OP. I’m 48 and recently sober after 30 years of heavy drinking.

    On reflection, I was trying to drink myself happy. That will never, ever work. I’ve found what I need in terms of happiness in sobriety.

    Basically – weed and booze clearly isn’t the answer for you. I’d leave well alone if I were you

    I smoked daily throughout my 20s. In my 30s I started to get panicky and tight chested 4/5 times. My brain was telling me something. I don’t smoke anymore. Stop getting high.

    I smoked Weed twice and had panic attacks etc because i was to depressive for it. Alkohol relaxes me.

    Now i could have just kept going or accept the fact that Weed is not for me.

    Why dou you feel the need to Take drugs If you don’t feel good from them?

    The herb is revealing you to yourself. If you can work towards improving those things you listed through gym, therapy, relationships, and fulfillment, you’ll probably be able to enjoy getting high a lot more. At least, that’s been my experience.

    Your situation is nothing to fix. It’s something to understand. You can’t fix yourself because you’re not broken. I would recommend dropping the booze and smoking because once you hit your 30s it will be a bitch to quit. And you’ll want to quit because you’ll start seeing its effects and how it’s holding you back. You’re pretty self aware, so I would go down that path of learning more about yourself. Smoking can bring you into a reflective state, but there are better alternatives that are more sustainable.Ā

    I used to enjoy smoking when I was younger. Then the hallucinogenic aspects of it really did not appeal to me so I had to stop. It isn’t for everyone.

    Otherwise, you can try different indica and sativa (not sure which one is the more calming version, that one is probably for you) strains until you find ones that work better.

    If you make yourself uncomfortable you have had too much. Weed these days is ridiculously strong and regular users have ridiculous tolerance.

    Have a single puff and wait 15 minutes. It doesn’t kick in immediately.

    You also can hang out with people smoking without doing so. I had a 100% sober guy in our group of drunks in college and he was hilarious.

    Start smoking by itself with no alcohol. It’s not just a recreational drug for fun. It’s used for journeys and self reflection. If those bad trips keep coming up, let them. Stop running. Get high, yes it will be scary. Just lay in bed. Get high. And let those thoughts enter and ride that high until you’ve reached a point of acceptance or growth. After you do that, you’ll stop getting bad highs but your brain is focused on overdue things that it does not feel that you have resolved. It’s like a smelly trash bag. Take that shit and deal with it. Then your kitchen won’t stink anymore. Hope this helps šŸ’•

    Some bros just can’t handle high amounts like of THC levels. I was like that when I hit dabs for the first time and the potency had me super fucked up.

    If you’re going to continue using try getting things in lower potency.

    Weed? Either stop with THC completely or try and find some low THC/High CBD weed. Weed these days is way too strong.

    I don’t smoke it anymore but did in high school. Only a few times I remember that I actually enjoyed the weed high and those were what we thought to be indica strains, which are more relaxing and will almost put you to sleep.

    Some people don’t do well with weed. That could be you. Or maybe you’re getting too high.

    Try not mixing alcohol and weed. When you use weed and alcohol together it can make both effects feel stronger.

    Try reducing how much you smoke. Or try a different kind.

    Sativa dominant weed can make you more anxious on average. Try a hybrid, indica dominant hybrid or just indica strain. If you smoke too much indica you will probably get really tired and feel like sleeping though, so again, go slow and don’t smoke too much.

    I would say when you get high, your brain is attempting to get you to process something that you might need to process. I’ve been getting stoned every day for years now. I noticed at one point when I got into a poly relationship with a couple, every time I got high, I’d have a bad trip (which I kept to myself at that point because this relationship was very toxic). But as soon as I got out of that relationship and back to a more stable living situation, my highs went back to being much better. Getting high isn’t for everyone, but personally I think your brain is wanting you to process something that you haven’t fully processed yet.

    I went through this recently and quit smoking, in my younger days I was an everyday smoker then stopped for a few years. When I started smoking again it was just pure paranoia.

    Exactly like you are describing, just start over analyzing everything that happened and stuff ten years ago. I think it’s just now I’m 31 with kids and a lot more responsibilities so my brain just goes into panic mode because I’m not all there and I’m worried something might happen where I need to be

    I have had a few buddies who never smoke and claim this, I never believed them until I went through it but yeah my advice is to just not smoke

    As someone who has had those bad trips and some of those personal issues you mentioned, but now smokes near daily –

    First off, there is no pressure to enjoy it! You will be healthier, more rich and possibly/probably even happier without smoking weed in your life. So if you decide you don’t like it, fair enough.

    Couple quick fire stuff for considering if you want to try it a bit more:

    • ⁠plan activities to do once you get high: whether that’s having some great movies ready with snacks, or video games you really enjoy, or music albums you want to dive into. If you get high and have nothing to do your mind will inevitably spiral, but doing my favourite hobbies after a couple tokes is amazing sometimes.
    • ⁠try smoke less, it sounds like you’re having too much and getting too high. Take one or two hits and see how you feel if you haven’t already tried that.

    Lastly I’d just say as a heads up – be careful, weed has been a lovely substance I’ve used in my life, but I’m not too proud to say there were times it became a habit and I’ve abused it too. Be careful you don’t do your hobbies ONLY when you get high for instance.

    First of all, stop doing drugs. Shit is a lot more dangerous to your health before your brain is fully matured, which happens around 25-27 years old.

    Second, get therapy. Drugs have a tendency to amplify whatever you’re feeling. If you’re struggling with bad mental health, there’s a high risk that it’ll be amplified while under the influence.

    Third, when you’re older, older than 25-27, maybe try some magic mushrooms? There are some new studies showing great promise of psychedelics helping to rewire the brain to help the brain figure out and get over trauma.

    I had a really shitty childhood myself, so trust me, therapy is going to help you a lot more than drugs will.

    Two things: try heavy indica instead of heavy sativa. If you don’t have the option to pick for whatever reason, just abstain. Avoid oils and vapes. And if you still get down on yourself while smoking, abstain.

    Second: these issues aren’t going away on their own. Seek professional help no matter what you choose to dry with recreational drugs.

    Getting high amplifies things so if you already have negative thoughts, anxiety etc it’s probably going to be worse

    I think for you to be able to enjoy in these drugs you’d need to get yourself to a better place first. And in some cases they just aren’t for everybody

    drugs aren’t for everyone. you’ll end up learning the hard way if you don’t stop now. i used to enjoy getting high in my 20s til I had one traumatic experience dealing with someone else’s bad trip while high. ever since then i had so much anxiety prior to getting high that only increased once the high hit. ended up having psychosis one time. stopped smoking for a bit. moved to a state where it was legal and tried again….worked while dosing myself with a pen….i could kinda control how high i got and it was comfortable. that i smoked a strain that induced psychosis again. had to be real with myself and say it ain’t for me. i literally cant even do 5MG edibles without feeling anxious and mad at myself for not being totally functional. i just spend the high paranoid and annoyed. id rather just be sober than roll the dice and hope for a different outcome than what i been getting each time
