It might still set on mars, if that planet continues to rotate when earth stops rotating

Correct. The sun orbits around earth. So as it makes its way across, that’s what we see as rising, and thus the side of Earth sees as setting. The Earth, being stationary and at the center of the solar system sees this as a sunrise and a sunset. The other planets however also orbit around us, so they will eventually pass the halted sun that is orbiting earth.

And if the sun (the sphere of plasma) was teleported to another part of the universe?

Great, so no sunrise or sunset pics influencers are gonna be devastated.

Where there’s no sun, then there’s the moon.

The Earth would have stopped rotating. So the sun would remain stationary in whatever position on the celestial sphere it happened to be in when that happened.

Of course if the body of the Earth suddenly stopped, the atmosphere and oceans would probably continue for awhile, out of inertia. The Earth rotates at a speed of a thousand miles an hour at the equator, so this would have the effect of scrubbing the continents clean and erasing all trace of life from the surface of the Earth. Probably for the best, at this point.

If the sun decides to sleep in tomorrow, does that mean we get a bonus night? Asking for a friend who loves midnight snacks.

If this shower thought interests you, you might like the novel “The Last Day” by Andrew Hunter Murray. Essentially, Earth’s rotation has stopped, leaving parts of the plant in total darkness, perpetual sunlight, or on the cusps. I quite liked it. Some interesting characters, and always something happening!

Not if the reason it doesn’t rise is because it doesn’t exist anymore.
