I might permanently leave society and become a hermit.

r/

I hate society and the rats race that I was born into and unlike the vast majority I question it.

From the time we’re born we’re taught to get an education so we can get a good job. We need a good job to make good money. We need money so we can buy a bunch of crap we don’t really need.

I’m sick of waking up at the ass crack of dawn to go to work and deal with peoples greed and shitty attitude.

I’ve begun the slow process of learning skills that will enable me to live off the land and plan to pack my rucksack with all the necessities including but not limited to the completed works of Mark Twain and find a nice spot deep in the wilderness.

I plan to try it out for a year and if it agrees with me it may become permanent.

It’s way more peaceful. I avoid public as much as possible. The drama is so much less.

I’ve always had this plan in the back of my mind.
What about moving to a third world country and doing that?
Might be a lot of fun.

Honestly, what is stopping you? A lot of people will have a lot of push back because we are all trained to ‘fall in line’ and ‘think of the consequences’ but hey, if you want that experience, go for it. Life is about learning, moving, figuring out who you are, what you want and we have more freedom than we think, albeit more difficult than prior decades.

I feel like you. Always have. And I did leave society. I grew up in a middle class town and it was before the internet (90s) and all I knew as a girl was that I was going to grow up, go to college, get married, have a family, and go to church. That was all I saw. I hated it. I told my mother I hated society and wanted to live in the woods. She said ‘that’s not an option’. Turns out, it is.

I did go to college and do the whole thing but myself caught up with me. Glad she did. Quit and sold everything (didn’t own much) and lived on the road as a nomad. Only slept for free in national forests and even bathed and washed my clothes in creeks/rivers. I didn’t pay for internet and just hiked/read books. It was awesome honestly. And hard. But it was still just what I needed.

We don’t get to choose societies horse shit but we do get to choose how we respond to it, what we do with it. How we live in this very strange world is our very art form. Good luck to you my friend. Don’t be afraid to go your own way.

Hey man, idk why but I feel this. The grind’s a bitch, ain’t it? Considered vanlife myself. Just travel, live, and work on my terms, y’know? But lowkey, we need some societal change, not just escapism. Dunno if retreating to the woods is a panacea or just dodging the issues. But def respect your guts in challenging life’s norm tho. Stay safe out there, dude. ✌️

Buy a cheap homestead in Alaska and move there in April/May. Probably need to find one walking distance from a navigable river or place where a plane can land. Cut up some firewood. Work your butt off building a small cabin with a wood stove that will shelter you in the winter. Cut firewood. Build a food cache up high where the bears can’t get it. Cut firewood. Kill a moose and process it to eat during the winter. Cut firewood. Survive the winter. Gather food or grow and preserve some when it warms up. Cut up some firewood. Now you know what to prepare for with the upcoming winter. Learn to trap, and finally cut more firewood than you think you need.

I’m a creature of comfort so I wouldn’t be right in a forest; I’m going a step up and taking up the gypsy life instead – almost got enough to get my licence and then I’m going to buy a mobile home and live in that little fucker til I’m dead. I’m in the UK so I’ll just drive the coast and become the surfer wanker I always wanted to be as a kid. I work kitchens these days so I’ll always have something to do somewhere for a bit of bob and I’m slowly learning about how to take care of caravans so I’ll be self sufficient that way. As long as I can get enough to afford a little internet dongle to game with and by food I’m right as rain. Props to anyone actively seeking their own little cut of shit in this meaningless cunt life 👌

People like op will be viewed as mentally ill no matter what by normal people.

It’s a dangerous lifestyle. You can get killed by animals, disease, starvation etc

You probably don’t want this lifestyle. Nobody enjoys no bed to go to, no running water etc. most people end up destroying the environment even more while living off of it than they do living in their homes

I feel your frustration, that sounds nice honestly being away from everyone. But if something goes wrong and you are all alone? Everything is nice in fantasy.😑 Idk if you hate your job that badly maybe find a job that allows you to work from home?

Yup you’re the only one questioning it. Nobody else has ever had any of these thoughts, you’re a total rogue maverick. Nobody has ever gone off into the woods seeking a different life, you’ll have a super easy time finding a good spot and you are starting from zero so you’ll be totally set.

    Yup. Good luck.

watch a 2004 film “Alone in the Wilderness” on a man who did this in Alaska. lived there over 30? years

You’re gonna need a lot more than a rucksack and you’re gonna need years of experience with those skills you’re learning. People been killing themselves this way for decades.

Edit: I don’t think people fully appreciate American pioneers and explorers. It really is THAT dangerous out here. It’s a VASTLY different and more dangerous environment to Europe. The explorers were basically super men, and even those who had native guides and entire groups of skilled and well equipped people with them suffered severe consequences.

To do something like this by yourself is going to require not only a shit ton of knowledge and experience but also a lot of modern tools. Things like chainsaws, generators, fuel, you can’t do what they did by yourself, you will need these things or you will likely die.

Honesty the only way you can really viably do this on your own is by having a bunch of shit flown in by helicopter (I’ve thoughts about this a lot)

Your only other option is something like a beast of burden and you can’t just turn that thing off and store it for two months it needs to constantly be fed

  25. jackfaire Avatar

Correction “Like the vast majority I question it” Most of us question it and all check out to various degrees.

  26. Jellylegs_19 Avatar

I’d do this if I didn’t have so many people relying on me. The pursuit of money has brought nothing but anxiety and worry.

I’m sure it feels nice when you finally have that stable income that’s more than enough for you and your family. Hell I dream everyday of accomplishing that. But the path to that is full of disappointment, heartbreak and lots of wasted time.

My ancestors used to be bedouins in a dessert. Not saying it’s an essay life, but it was… Straightforward I guess?

After I lit my life on fire by volunteering information that got me classified as a Civilian witness in a war crimes investigation (Afghanistan Inquiry) went public
On social media and made myself a marked man with a fairly substantial contingent of the Australian Special Forcee (Special Air Servics Regiment respectfully) and managed to get completely black listed by every media outlet and newscasters downunder, I became a hermit.
Let me tell you, that Geezar from Space Wars or whatever it was called made it look easy, rolling around in a cool hoodie, saving kids from the Sand Wiggers, my experience was not like that at all.
Firstly ya gotta find a banging cave. Have you even considered this requirement semi-mason? Yeah, didn’t think so. Well I did and as I live in the mountains I was able to inhibit one that was pretty sufficient to say the least.
What are you doing to eat? Well seeing as you are saying a big Effff Uoooo to society and all its trappings (hermits don’t supermarket my dude) you are gonna either want to be sufficient in hunting with you bare hands (part of the hermit code) or have a golden falcon/hawk you can unleash to bring you home the preverbal bacon (probably you might score a squirrel or possum, get ready to be hungry)
You enjoy in the multi human bonding extra recreationally activitie AKA Snu Snu
    Well………
Being a hermit is a heavy burden to carry. As I was already pretty much “Persona non grata” and an empty shell with very little of not nothing to lose in this life. I made the transition to unemployed cray cray who only goes out at night. Squats in a cave. Has no friends or family (that will admit to being related to him) shuns technology and modern conveniences yet writes volumes upon volumes of diaries that translate to basic gibberish, and looks like the poster boy for Rock Bottom (North Korea edition)
You’ll be pinned on the multitude of WhatsApp neighbourhoods group chats, “do not approach, not armed, to slow to be a danger but is seriously very weird.
Doors that were once open in the normal merry-go-round that is mainstream society will slam shut and be deadlocked for the inside. Your options will diminish rapidly and without warning and the harsh realities of living out in the elements will weather away any previous signs you were once possibly handsome. Now just a fading fucking reminder of what you had to be.
But don’t let me stop you, sounds like a solid decision. What could possibly go wrong.

I used to know someone who believed they could live off $2000 a year living off the grid. $2000 is nothing in the US, but can support a whole family in some parts of the world. As long as you have the will, you can do it. You might be very lonely, but you can certainly do it.
