Why does motivation only show up right before bedtime?

r/

This happens to me constantly. I’ll spend the whole day procrastinating because of my low energy during the day and then as soon as I decide it’s time to sleep suddenly my brain flips a switch and out of nowhere I feel motivated. It’s like my body refuses to be productive when I actually have the time but the second my head hits the pillow I want to “get my life together” Why does this happen? Is it some kind of brain trick where the pressure of the day being “over” makes me finally feel motivated or am I just wired wrong?

The most frustrating part is that I know if I actually get up and try to act on this motivation I’ll be exhausted tomorrow. But if I ignore it and go to sleep the motivation will be completely gone by morning.

Does anyone else experience this random burst of energy at the absolute worst time or is it just me?

This is so common. Your brain gets a rush of motivation at night because the pressure to perform is finally off. It feels safe to be ambitious when there is no actual time left to act. You are not wired wrong at all. It is a classic procrastination loop

Yeah it’s weird normally I’d lay there and be like yup tomorrow I’ll get my shit together, 20years later I still suck at everything

This sounds pretty normal to me, but I have ADHD… it’s also a thing called “revenge bedtime procrastination” where you stay up because you finally have some time that is yours

I saw something about this once, it’s really common. A psychologist was talking about it and said basically it’s because the plans for tomorrow are well in the future and therefore seem more achievable. Also, because it’s not a “doable task” right now, you get the happiness of your brain visualising the task but not having to struggle or work for it because the work will be done “tomorrow”. But then when you get up the next day you go back to the reality of needing to achieve dopamine to achieve that goal, and it either slips your mind or you de-prioritise it, because now you have to do the actual work to do it.

    Normal.

    It sucks, but normal.

cortisol drops at night, so focus feels easier

Same! I think it’s because there’s no pressure anymore. The day is already gone so your mind relaxes and ideas can flow

What’s worse, having accomplished something and being exhausted, or having accomplished nothing and being rested?

You’re not wired wrong. What you’re describing is actually very common, and there are several reasons behind it:
have u heard of the circadian rhythem? lol

Your brain and body follow a daily rhythm. For many people, alertness dips in the afternoon and rises again at night. That late-night energy surge is real, especially if you’re a “night owl.” Lots of people experience this “midnight motivation.” It’s not laziness or being broken. It’s a mismatch between your body clock, lifestyle, and responsibilities.

Bro that’s literally revenge bedtime procrastination your brain waits until the day is “over” to finally want to do stuff. Happens to a lot of us

Not just you. I call it ‘bedtime productivity syndrome’ 😂

Not only I am more productive at night but also for some reason watching movies or youtube documentaries are way more fun. I am unusually more engaged with things at night. Coffee, god forbid, at night taste like heaven. So does pizza. Its not the same during day time.

Its fucking odd. Even if I am super tired I can easily stay awake. Apparently there is something called “Night Watch Hypothesis”. Basically, evolution made some folks evolve to stay awake at night. So that they can guard others. Make sense then. Not so much now

You might wanna look into supplements to sleep better. Melatonin and glysine might help.

I’ve seen this question posted on Reddit so many times over the years, and it’s always so weird to me because from the time I’m done with dinner to the time I go to bed, I’m in relax mode, lol.
