During routine traffic stops, is it that rare for people to be cordial with you?

r/

I’ve been pulled over four times in the last 20 years of driving for speeding, but so far every cop has surprisingly let me off with a warning. I have always been respectful when they pull me over as I know its totally on me.

I have heard that being nice increases your chances of getting a warning, so is it just that common that you guys encounter drivers in a sour mood that the nice ones stand out, or is it actually fairly common that you don’t write tickets for speeding infractions?

Thank you for your question, /u/RockyBass! Please note this subreddit allows answers to law enforcement related questions from verified current and former law enforcement officers as well as members of the public. As such, look for flair verifying their status located directly to the right of their username.
While someone without flair may be current or former law enforcement unwilling to compromise their privacy on the internet for a variety of reasons, consider the possibility they may not have any law enforcement experience at all.

90% of my stops are cordial or at least business as usual (Maybe someone being mad at me) then there is a VERY small minority that are the “What’s your name and badge number!”, “I’m not driving, I’m traveling”, I want your Sgt. “( I’m the Lt., my boss is the chief and I’m not calling him about your tail light being out)

I’d say most people are cordial to some extent, if for no other reason than the self-serving reason that they’re hoping to get out of the citation. You always know who’s actually polite by if they’re still polite after you give them the citation, rather than changing their tune and being a dick.
