Does the southern cone have some sort of bias against Bolivia or something?

r/

I swear I see like multiple videos and post online of people being racist towards Bolivians and saying the country is a third world slum from people from like Argentina and Chile for some reason. After I visited I really don’t get why they hate Bolivia. I mean the people are nice, the food was pretty neat, the culture is great, and from as far as I experienced it was actually pretty safe, even outside the cities, and I was honestly impressed by how some cities looked. Idk what do y’all think about it?

it’s not just the southern cone

It’s probably mutual animosity between them to my knowledge Bolivia is still salty about losing their coast to a war with Chile

Bolivia is a country that is an enemy of all countries they share border with. Especially against Chile. Bolivia has a policy of taking Chilean territory by force or war. In addition, its people have different habits from those of the Southern Cone, and they do not usually adapt well, not to mention that they arrive in very precarious conditions.

Most of Latin America sees bolivia as a poor and backwards place. People in the South of Bolivia want to be considered southern come some.

However people are wonderful and it’s a great place to visit. People are very nice there and it’s an interesting place to visit.

Brazil as well. Prejudice and racism know no limits

It is racism and not only in the southern cone

Bolivia is indeed pretty poor though, poorer than all its surrounding countries. For most people here it’s known as Peru but poorer lol.

And then their leaders have been openly belligerent for decades. Particularly against Chile, they still claim the land they lost in the 1800s Pacific War in a clearly populist way.

Lastly they are very rural with a very high proportion of indigenous population, so that’s another layer of prejudice against them.

Argentina received massive Bolivian immigration during the 1980s-2010s, when around 600k Bolivians arrived to the country.

Most Bolivians are very poor immigrants and mostly indigenous, so they face a lot of discrimination.

Some of the discrimination and bias against Bolivians comes from them grabbing public or private lands (“tomas”) and building slums (“villas miseria”).

There are lots of Bolivian squatters taking over lands (especially public lands) and then selling them to other Bolivians, where they build huge slums with their “typical” architecture (unplastered walls).

Also, Bolivians crossing the border to get free healthcare in Argentina while Argentinians were left death on the road in Bolivia and denied medical treatment raised concerns about the lack of reciprocity, which caused more resentment from Argentinians.

But Bolivians are very hardworking people and thanks to them we have farm workers, fruitshops and access to quality vegetables for a good price on our tables. We should be thankful for that.

So I think it’s a mixed bag. Nobody deserves being discriminated and xenophobia is always bad. Argentina should focus on enforcing migration laws and building codes to stop immigrants from seizing public lands and building slums, and ask Bolivia for reciprocity (or otherwise impose the same measures).

Bolivia did fight in a war against all their neighbours (except Perú, but they dragged them into war against chile), last being against paraguay around 1935 or so, i guess there’s some animosity there.

I’m not a fan of the landscapes there, i love mountains but i prefer greener mountains, everything there looks brown, dead, barely any trees (at least from the stereotype most people imagine). And cities don’t look so good either, tons of bare brick buildings from what i’ve seen, which is not too appealing

And at least in the southern cone and brazil you have the football thing, where bolivia keeps organizing matches in stadiums higher and higher in elevation so that their team doesn’t get beaten too badly.

My Chilean dad (with a Bolivian father) married a bougie Bolivian. The rest, according to him, are “Indios.”

His racism knows no bounds, and neither does his “complejo” and self-hatred.

Is because they are racist clearly

  12. Superfan234 Avatar

In general , chileans like Bolivia…

  13. Think_Visual_3 Avatar

Fuckin racism. I believe these people also think the same about Peru just because most of us look indigenous (although currently we are doing a bit better than Argentina for that matter, and we are not poorer than Colombia and Paraguay even though we look far more indigenous than them whatsoever).

I have heard from others about them being ugly (not sure if this is the racism people are talking about, but its pretty much everything I heard about them). I have never met one so I have no idea about the veracity.

From all the 10 comenbol countries I would say Bolívia is the one I know the least. Ignorance might be the source of the prejudice towards them.

I don’t know about the other countries, but in Argentina it’s true and it’s basically racism.

The truth is that we never talk about Bolivia, except when the topic of the territory they lost in the war comes up, because they keep claiming it every year, especially during their presidential elections, which can be annoying. The truth is that Bolivia is indeed a poor country, and unfortunately, its politicians continue to exploit its people, deceiving them with these issues just to gain votes.

On the other hand, in Bolivia, at least a few years ago, schools practically encouraged hostility and hatred toward Chile, as if we were the evil invaders who stole their access to the sea and failed to uphold treaties. They portray us as the ones responsible for their misfortune.

I believe that the people of Bolivia are generally good and hardworking. Many live in Chile and are respected for that reason. It bothers me to see how their politicians continue to exploit those with less education and low income by using so many populist tactics.

Bolivians are probably the nicest of all the continent they’re just nice and hardworking, Bolivia actually has way less crime than a lot of his richer neighbors so if there’s racism is by no means justifiable

  22. bastardnutter Avatar

I don’t know about the rest but Bolivia just isnt a topic in Chile

  23. RepublicAltruistic68 Avatar

I think it’s just the standard racism that you’ll find throughout Latin America. Someone in Argentina told me that Bolivians were invaders and she felt totally comfortable saying that. Bolivia has a huge indigenous population and has had many issues so it’s easy for other nationalities to put their hatred on display, even if they’re also indigenous btw.

I went to Bolivia last year and found it to be gorgeous. I enjoyed Atacama in Chile but it doesn’t compare to the scenery once you cross into Bolivia. It’s just a gorgeous country and I actually enjoyed their food more than what I ate throughout the southern cone. I also felt fine walking around and taking the buses.

People hate poor migrants… I don’t know what else to tell you. Bolivia is a really poor country.

  25. 54B3R_ Avatar

In Chile it’s not just racism, it’s nationalism too because of the war of the Pacific where Chile ended up with all of Bolivia’s coastline

  26. catsoncrack420 Avatar

You should first under the term “racism” before using it so sparingly.

  27. AccomplishedFan6807 Avatar

Bolivia and Peru tend to be the punchline, and not just for the southern cone. It’s plain racism and whoever who tries to say otherwise is in denial.
