A lot of the food I eat is cheap just because I like it. Value Weetbix Jacket potatoes. Lots of tinned fish. Sandwiches. I like simple meals like a tin of kidney beans, rice, and veg. Value fishfingers are a nice treat. I wouldn’t ever buy the branded version of things like biscuits, milk, tinned tomatoes etc.
Remember that episode of Parks and Rec where Ron Swanson makes a hamburger that’s just cheap 80/20 chopped meat on a crappy grocery store bun? I love those hamburgers.
Ramen, frozen mixed veggies, leftover protein or maybe a hot dog, cheese.
Boil ramen and veggies, toss in protein to warm, drain, add cheese, stir to distribute melted cheese throughout, pepper. Yum. My “camp food” – fast, cheap, easy, and delish.
Spaghetti-Os. Sometimes straight from the can with a spork.
We never had it when we were kids. So in my kid-brain, it’s an expensive delicacy. Like underwear that doesn’t have someone else’s initials on the tag.
I’m Mexican, a millionaire, and live amongst the Whole Foods crowd. That being said: refried beans with queso fresco in a tortilla. Also, anything that I had as a kid in terms of Mexican snacks, street food, etc.
There’s a lot of cheap stuff. Cheap pizza is the big one, I don’t need fancy quality. I’ll eat that tostino’s or whatever. Doesn’t matter, you’ll never hear ne complain. Pizza is pizza. I love quality and I can make brick oven pizza in my back yard but I’m always grateful even with the cheap stuff.
Those cheap tough cuts, that cooked right, break down into deliciousness. If I see a pork shoulder/butt on sale, usually $0.99/lb, I make sure to grab at least another one to throw into the 2nd freezer. That’s just good eating if you know what you’re doing.
Taco Bell, I love it and I don’t care about the nutritional value whatsoever. For many years, I was in a career that enabled me to travel for work often, no expenses spared, to some of the nicest hotels and resorts in the US. I’m telling you the number of times I was eating a fancy meal thinking “I wish I was at Taco Bell” is a little appalling. I remember specifically one time sitting on the water’s edge at the Rosewood Miramar in Santa Barbara eating whatever fanciness was being served up and I asked my co-worker if she wanted to have Taco Bell delivered. She agreed and we did.
“Popeye food” it’s a comfort food from childhood. Thawed frozen spinach mixed with Italian dressing, cottage cheese, and mozzarella, stuffed in big shell noodles with canned tomatoes and more cheese on top.
