It appears Mexico prior to 1998 denied Mexican nationality to those who were born abroad and obtained birthright citizenship there? After 1998 until recently they allowed it but only for one generation?
Most of the Americas including neighboring Guatemala granted birthright citizenship. Does this mean the child officially would have to obtain a visa to return with parents to Mexico and was that a difficult process for the family? Would a child be treated like any other Guatemalan despite parents being Mexican? Especially if they were “accidental” Guatemalans?
It’s interesting that countries like China they forbid dual citizenship, but they consider kids born abroad as Chinese Nationals that is unless the parent(s) had “settled” abroad at time of the child’s birth and their kids received foreign nationality at birth.

If you have mexican born parents you have the right to obtain citizenship even if you are born abroad.
If you are born in a mexican aircraft or vessel you have mexican citizenship.
If you have foreign parents but you are born in mexico you have mexican citizenship.
As far as I was taught it has always been like that.

Nope, at least since 1934 they had the right if their parents were mexicans
I was born in 96 in Italy, i got my citizenship right after i was born in the mexican consulate in Milán i still have double citizenship Italy/mexico
Mexico used to be less friendly for dual citizenship
Parents of Mexicans born in the US would get two birth certificates- the real one from the US and a fake Mexican one to be used in school
It did change but not sure when I think there was some sort of amnesty for people that had the fake certificate
