Hi,
I have a psychopath mother in law who is trying to buy a home right now. During college she co-signed on my husband’s private student loans. She is now claiming that in order to be approved for a mortgage she needs our bank statements from every month the student loan was paid. She is saying that a screenshot from the student loan website doesn’t count because it doesn’t show that it is my husband who is paying it not her.
Again she is psycho, so I want to know if this sounds real or her way of trying get insight into our spending and income.

If the mortgage provider wants proof that your husband paid the payments, that’s reasonable. I would suggest you collect 6 months of statements, black out everything except the date and amounts of cleared payments as well as the name of the person on the account that sent the payments, the bank name and the last four of the account and send that. She shouldn’t need more than that and if she says she does, I’d say she probably is having too much trouble getting the mortgage and that’s not your problem.
As a former underwriter and processor for a mortgage company, I can assure you that this is normal. Your psychopath mil has to prove without a doubt that someone else has made the payments, usually at least 12 months. Do not black anything out, it’s unlikely to be accepted.
If you don’t want mil to see your statements, have her lender contact you directly, and you can send the statements directly to them. Your mil will never see her entire file at the lender. (Unless she thinks to demand seeing it, but I’d be sure you tell the processor that you absolutely don’t want the statements revealed to her)
Just black out the non loan payments and then give it to her. No harm, just a lil hassle. Mortgage people are super invasive financially.
