Take comments and advice with a grain of salt. Lots of people are projecting their own bias, karma farming, trolling and have a very narrow view of right and wrong.
It’s addictive. Redditors are mean. It’s a waste of time. It is full of untruths and invalid opinions. What’s not to like?
Be careful, sometimes reddit peeps are SO mean.
Reddit is a shallow opinion trench. It is full of liars, bullies, misinformation, terrible jokes and images that make you want to die. It also has a negative side.
Read it, don’t write on it
You will be downvoted for absolutely no reason
You can be 100% right on something but downvoted to hell because reddit.
Join some subs of stuff that interests you.
It can be broader entertainment/information stuff, or silly videos, or cute videos, or NSFW videos, or whatever, but the “best” use is honing in on a few subs that are really specific to your interests.
Like, instead of joining a General Politics sub (unless that’s your thing) and arguing with strangers about current events, find the sub with diehard fans of some obscure show, or game, or collectibles, or whatever. There’s probably a sub for anything you’re into, and if there isn’t, you could start one.
Participate.
Lurk. Leave some comments. Post if you have something worth posting (OC or Crossposts) rinse, and repeat.
If you’re using Reddit like you would use the other Socials, and just pursuing engagement, and upvotes, you’re gonna have a bad time, but if you seek out a few Rabbitholes to go down with other people that like that Rabbithole, it’s a much more satisfying and “Social” platform than some of the others.
You will be banned from subs for no reason
Bans for innocence are quite popular.
You can find niche subs like r/personalfinance and r/gardening or video game subs or any other hobby really. You can find tech oriented subs and really specific store subs like r/Publix and also advice and relationship subs. There are news subs and political subs. Some subs will have a particular bias and will ban users who participate in other subs. For example, people who comment in r/conspiracy report getting banned from other subs. The niche and hobby subs can be really great for information and conversation. If you set your feed to Home you will see posts from the subs you’ve joined. If you set it to News, you’ll see stories posted that you may not see in your regular news media.
Reddit has the one of largest pornygraphic videos and images data.
So, always make sure that you keep “Show mature content (I’m over 18)” button off, so that you don’t across pornygraphic subreddits, posts and images easily.
You can not get every reference, comedic quote so you will feel a little left out in some threads.
Reddit is great and full of useful information. Upvote stuff that you like and/or is useful, downvote stuff that is not useful and/or is flat out wrong. Just like many algo’s, the more you interact with certain stuff, the more of that type of stuff you will see.
Just be wary of echo chambers. Non-factual/highly subjective info such as relationship advice can be pretty questionable. Keep in mind who the typical Redditor may be when seeking such advice. A lot of people have chips on their shoulder due to their own life circumstances, and opinions will seem loud on here making it easy to think its a normal/popular take on a subject.
I’ve been around for over 15 years, and the site is a shell of its former self.
most relationship advice is “dump them”
Don’t take anything seriously like any online communities.
The people here are mean
Before you comment, look for others who have the same comment and upvote them.
The mods are a little tin pot dictators and will use any and every excuse to exert their authority.
There are truly awful things here if you know the right keywords.
People are dumb and mean. In real life, these traits have harsh consequences…so they are attenuated. Reddit allows them to be so without consequence…so they are amplified.
You’re arguing with 12 year olds.
She’s not that into you
You should leave reddit before you become addicted.
Reddit works somewhat well as result pool that’s found via search engines but the advice provided here, especially relationship advice, is just terrible. terrible, terrible, terrible. Add in that there are far too many downvote trolls and people who respond to posts just for the sake of being contrarian, sprinkle in a little moderator sense of self superiority and this place is a toxic mess.
Run, save yourself!!!
There is no reason for internet fights. Social media is supposed to be fun (at least in theory), and I think Reddit is the best type!! I joke it is like intelligent social media, lol!
Learn to read the rules before posting. Honestly, i didn’t realize there was no meta rule on this sub, so you choose wisely.
As a moderator (on a different sub), i have to tell you that people will report you for literally anything or nothing. Just be yourself and don’t worry too much about it because nothing really matters here.
Reddit is a very specific and selective section of the people in the real world. Do not make the mistake of assuming that Reddits opinions and thoughts, are that of the wider community.
Don’t feed the Trolls
If you break both of your arms stay away from your mother.
Don’t fuck a coconut.
Don’t do heroin on a whim.
Patrick Mahomes will regress to the mean.
Speed hawk.
Only noobs use Mega Knight.
also the rapid proliferation of the AITA (am I the asshole?) posts (that are then read and commented on on YouTube or Tok Tok) people really do put up with some ridiculous crap.
Reddit used to be a decent source of information, pull up google and search “how do this thing, reddit” and you would get a post from 5 years ago full of super detailed information and advice on whatever topic. This place was helpful.
They have since sold out, became left leaning as shit, and monetized the internet points you get here. Tons of shit posts just karma farming for chump change.
Your interactions will not be judged on their truthfulness, accuracy, or validity. This is a cesspool of popularity, not a bastion of truth.
You will only realize this when you post an irrefutable, obvious fact just to share an anecdote, or tidbit of information….
…and you will be downvoted into oblivion.
People don’t give a fuck about the truthfulness or validity of your posts or comments. They only vote on whether they like it, or not.
Popular opinion. That’s it.
So, for future reference, don’t base your self esteem or your identity on Karma, or take up/down votes as a paradigm of your worth or validity. -> Don’t take reactions personally.
Reddit is just a public opinion meter. That’s it.
There are tons of subreddits here. Anything you can possibly think of is here somewhere. Some are cool and some are cruel.
The big subreddits are a cesspool. The good stuff happens in the smaller ones.
That Reddit cannot be monetized the same way like other social media like x for example.
A LOT of the posts in the popular subs are bots. A lot of the comments in popular subs are bots.
And pls for the love of shit, don’t believe every story posted here… especially those in AmITheAsshole and that sort.
Not saying they’re ALL fake but just to be safe, treat them all as if they are and don’t get worked up over some bullshit someone posted.
Just because someone asks a question doesn’t mean you have to answer it!!!
When someone goes on full blast over something you posted or a comment you made, keep in mind that other person might be a fifth-grader with no one monitoring their internet use.
I think of reddit as a neighborhood. It has good parts, like well-known subreddits, but has bad parts, like the sexual subreddits. My advice is, unless you’re looking for that kind of stuff, stay in the nice part of the neighborhood!
Sometimes people are really mean, like out of nowhere. Instead of just disagreeing with you, they insult. You will be told to “touch grass” at least once over the most innocuous comment.
You will type the most profound words ever, and they will be ignored. But when you throw out a stupid, low effort comment, you’ll break the internet with upvotes.
Don’t take anything here too seriously. It’s entertainment.
Delete all the mqjor subs from your list.
The start picking subjects you are interested in.
The default subs are moderated by bias mods who ban people that don’t agree with the hive mind (popular opinion), or anyone who questions their power. As much as they claim to support discussion, they don’t.
The bigger the sub, typically, the lower the quality of the comments and the meaner the people. Reddit voting system works terribly for large groups.
