I made a mistake by assuming that I had filled out my exemption from housing form for my school, which would have reimbursed me $3000+. Because I thought I had, I got an apartment and signed a lease that lasts the full school year. Surprise surprise when I got my housing assignment from my school, I was very confused. I sent them an email saying I thought I was exempt, but because I filled out only the first phase of the housing application, but not phase 2 or 3, they automatically assigned me. They sent me my housing assignment 5 days after the deadline to do late exemption had passed, and when I emailed them they said there’s nothing they can do. So, I’m now down $3000 and I can’t work because where I am studying doesn’t allow students to work on a visa. What can I do to either get my money back from the school or work somehow? I haven’t told my parents yet because they would freak out that we’re not getting our reimbursement due to our current situation at home. Any advice? By the way, I am an international student currently studying in China, but I am from the States and go to an international school based in the States. Location: China.
