So, to sum everything up I started renting from these dorms that were close to my college in 2021. I moved in there and there was issues immediately upon moving in. There were roaches and the place was dirtier than I thought it would be and there was a lot of issues with there being leaking and the trash not being picked up and dog poop everywhere and it was a very unhealthy situation so I moved out. A year and a half later I had to move back in because I didn’t have money to live anywhere else in the area (I live I california) and that was the cheapest situation to live in. They let me move back in after initially telling me that I wasn’t able to move in because of a financial move out, (even though I moved out due to the roaches and the gross living situation), my roommates were better and I enjoyed my time there better. I stayed for another two years and then moved out. A couple months after I completely moved out I got emails saying that I owed $580 and I was like I know I don’t owe that much money. I know I never missed a single payment. I never was late on my rent and I never had any issues with the renting office and I have proof of all of this in documented form. I also have documented slips with my move out statement saying that I owed zero dollars and anything after that I paid off was for maintenance. I paid $40 for maintenance when they repainted my room for the next renter. The email that was sent to me stating I owed money was sent by somebody that didn’t even work at the office anymore and was fired the day that I came in and asked the office what I owed. They looked up my account and said that I didn’t owe them a single cent and I told them that it was warning me that it would put a collections on me and drop my credit significantly. They said they didn’t have anything on their books and couldn’t explain what the money was and I said OK and left. I came back again after I got another email and again they said the same thing. I tried to talk to a manager and they refused, lying and saying that there was no managers there even though they would leave the room and go talk to the manager that was next-door. Fast-forward another few months, the collection hits my credit account and it drops my credit 150 points. I was at 740. It dropped me to 618. I went through all the hoops and tried to talk to the credit collections company and my credit company for my Fico score and disputed it numerous times submitting proof that I didn’t owe them. Every dispute was denied, and they told me that I still owe the money but could not explain where it came from. They tried saying that I owe the money from 2022 when I moved out the first time when I have a move out statement that says zero dollars on it and I have a move out statement from 2024 that says zero dollars on it. What should I do because this is impacting my renting future and I am unable to rent from anywhere else because they’ll see that I have a collections on my bank account and I refuse to pay for something that I know I don’t own and I have proof that I don’t owe.
