What was the hardest part about actually starting hair loss treatment as a man?

r/

Tbh I ignored my thinning hair for way too long part denial, part eh, too much effort. I kept telling myself I’d deal with it later, until one day I caught myself avoiding mirrors and realized it was messing with my head more than I thought.

Couple months ago I finally said screw it and started treatment (went with minoxidil + finasteride combo). What surprised me wasn’t even the routine itself, it was just getting over that mental block of admitting, yeah, I need to do something about this.

For guys who’ve been down this road:

  • What was the hardest part for you when starting out like the routine, side effect paranoia, or just the mental shift?
  • If you never went the treatment route, what made you stick with that decision?
  • Low-key also curious if anyone here has tried some of the newer subscription stuff or a product/service is it actually easier to stay consistent??

Side effect paranoia hit me hard in the beginning. I kept overthinking every headache or weird feeling. After like 3 months I realized most of it was in my head. Honestly wish I’d started earlier. Tbh the hardest part for me was just facing it, like admitting yeah dude, my hair’s actually thinning. Once I got over that, the routine wasn’t a big deal. I’ve been on Happy Head (it’s a hair care brand) for a bit now, and low-key it just made things easier ’cause I didn’t have to stress about mixing and matching stuff myself. Biggest win was just keeping it simple so I could actually stick to it.

The mental hurdle was massive. I’d joke about my hairline for years, but actually doing something about it felt like admitting I was getting older. That part sucked way more than the routine itself.

    I just shaved it

I like it this way (although i dont think i look better), i was kinda annoyed with my hair before tbh

Let me tell you, I tried treating my hair loss, I noticed that it was not falling as much, but nothing was growing back. At some point I decided to shave it and it was such a psychological relief. I don’t care anymore. There is a point when going bald that the little hair you have makes look so ridiculous and even older. You don’t really notice it since you look at yourself everyday, but it’s like a big neon sign with the word “insecurity” in your forehead (literally). I’m telling you from experience, I think I rejuvenated 2-3 years just by shaving my head.

i use topical version of both, took a while for me to build the courage to accept and take the ‘risk’.
Glad I did, although i’ll switch to oral soon.

topical minox is pretty risk free, many of my friends use it – can get it at costco/amazon. Finasteride is risky and side effects vary from man to man. Good luck

Hardest part was convincing my doctor to prescribe my Finasteride. He went on about the potential side-effects, as well as saying I seemed to have a full head of hair so why did I need it?

The only reason it looks that way is thanks to how my stylist cuts my hair, and because minoxidil had helped hold onto it.

As for side-effects, I had no intentions of taking the pills orally and getting that high systemic exposure. I already had a plan for how to make it into a topical, and I’ve done for years now. Zero side-effects.

I just shaved mine, i’m lucky to have a great head shape for a bald head, a little less lucky with the beard growth, but i keep it neat and get it lined up at a barber every 2 weeks. Still better than fully shaved head, allthough it would be nice if the spots filled in a bit.

From what i’ve read hair loss treatment is a long journey, where some people get side effects, and the only real solution if you’re desperatly clinging onto your hair is a hair transplant. So i decided to just get rid of the hair and shave it smooth every 2 days with a razor.

It’s not hard at all. I started with topical minoxidil, helped a lot. Then I went ahead and got implants. Absolutely life changing. I do NOT have a good face for a shaved head. Think andy Samberg / Michael Cera. I needed hair to balance out my goofy features. Now I use topical minoxidil /finasteride and oral minoxidil. Still going strong.
I tried oral finasteride and had horrible sexual side effects. Could not get an erection to save my life, and it lasted weeks after I stopped taking the meds. Was absolutely terrifying.

I tried fighting it with rogaine for about six months, but eventually I just decided to commit to shaving my head. In the end I save a ton on hair cuts and shampoo, and I never have to worry about how my hair looks in the morning!

The hardest part is fighting the delusion that you can’t go bald.

I just shave my head and I actually love it. You should give that a try first because I’ve heard there can be some rough side effects from the hair loss stuff.

Just shave it off mate. Life truly begins once you leave all that shit behind.

Well I have this little electric palm shaver that is part of my morning routine. I just shave in my morning shower. I feel way more comfortable and confident shaving it off and owning it. I grow a big enough beard that I feel like my being bald is kind of expected.

I have good hair, with a natural hairline good enough for my age, and I am happy with it. I started Minoxidil (topical) because I want to maintain it as close as it is now, as long as possible. It am really convinced it slow down/almost stop my hairloss, and I have been on it for several years now.

The hardest part is the commitment to it, you have to be consistent.

I would have never used Finasteride and similar; those can have really bad side effects. What is a head full of hair worth for, if the tool cannot get hard, ever again? No thanks.

    Nothing.

I spent 30 dollars for a 6 month supply of Kirkland minoxidil, and like ten bucks for a rosemary shampoo. I had a full head of hair again in about three months and that’s it. There’s nothing else to really say about it.
