Georgia Power almost burned our house down

r/

Location: Atlanta, GA suburb

A month or two back, we woke up to a hot house and electricity working in only half the home. After contacting GA Power, they installed a temporary transformer. 30 min later, my husband smelled smoke and we ran outside to see the side of the house on fire. Luckily we caught it early and were able to out the fire out. We called the fire department and filed a report. It took GA Power 18 more hours to restore power (30 hours down total). The amount they offered us as compensation was so small for endangering our lives, spoiling 4 freezers of food and negligence. When we asked for more they wouldn’t budge. Do we have any way to fight them on this?

You’ve not said what they offered. Or what you actually spent on fixing the problems.

Did you file a claim with your homeowners insurance. Depending on your deductibles this might be an option.

You could also sue them in small claims for up to $15000 if your damages are in that range.

Note that “endangering your lives” is not usually a quantifiable loss.

Negligence would be a question of fact and law and might not be directly quatifiable either.
