My employer is threatening to remove hours off my paycheck/time card

So I work at a daycare in Vermont and have worked here off and on for about 4 years now but consistently now for a little over a year now.

We get one 30 minute break at some point in the day, however it’s not always a given. If two people call out then we don’t have the staff to give breaks. Well, the owner of the daycare sent a message to the employee group chat saying “Everyone is to take a half hour lunch break each day. If short staffed you talk to me from now on and I will figure out on your time cards. If I haven’t approved it then it will be taken off your time card.”

Can she do this? Often times I have over 80 hours but it’s because I have to come in early and stay passed closed (my hours are supposed to be 8:30-5 but for the last few months have been more like 7:30-5:15). We don’t get paid for anything over 80 hours anyway, instead we can use it for PTO.

I like this job a lot, I love the kids and the parents and my lead teacher but this feels really wrong. There only 10 employees here.

Quit coming in early and staying late. You say you have to. No you don’t. And take your breaks. If the center isn’t staffed this isn’t your problem, according to common sense and your boss.
