Hell no! My home state had 67 and my current one has 58. I know my local surrounding counties, the counties with big cities, and a handful with memorable names.
Absolutely not– kentucky has 120. Name a county and I can probably tell you the general part of the state, but there’s no way I could reel them all off or label them all on a map.
Yes it’s ridiculous that a state this size has 120 counties.
Most of them. Honestly though counties don’t really mean much for an ordinary traveller. County lines are usually in the middle of nowhere. Maybe over a river. You might pass a sign.
I now (again) live in the same state where I mostly grew up, and we all learned the Utah County Song in 4th grade (age 9-10). It’s a very boring song, but most people I know still have it memorized.
I could probably get 80% of the counties on a map.
Utah is a big state with big counties, so it’s not as much to learn as a lot of states east of us.
Probably about 10 counties around the Chicagoland area, and about 5 counties around the areas of California where I’ve lived. Would be wild guessing on most of the other counties.
I can name mine and the surrounding counties. Capitals county and major city counties eg Ohio has Hamilton County for Cincinnati, Logan County for Toledo, Franklin County for Columbus and Cuyahoga County for Cleveland.
Nope and I don’t know why it would be beneficial. Of course this varies from state to state but here there is no county level of government, they are pretty much only used for weather reports. It’s a small state, there’s no need to subdivide it.
My home state has 67 counties and my current state has 36. I’m not remembering them nor would I be able to even label them even if you gave me a list. At best, I’d probably be able to do my surrounding area
I know more than the average resident of my state, but that’s because I work in government so there’s a work reason for me to know. Before that there were multiple counties – nay, entire regions of the state – that I have never heard of.
Yes absolutely. But we’re small. Also, Connecticut functionally doesn’t use counties anyway so they’re mostly irrelevant besides assigning fun stereotypes to each one
No, but I think if you gave me a list of all of them with 10 “impostors,” I could detect at least 8 or 9 of them, both in the state I lived as a child and the state I’ve lived in for most of adulthood. They don’t really have much everyday importance, for lack of a better term (like, I was in 3 counties the other day, and if I didn’t know I was passing through them, I wouldn’t have noticed), but if you follow local governance and other news, you get to know the ones around you, through osmosis if nothing else.
The only way the average American can do that is if they live in a state like Rhode Island. Small and a dozen (or so) counties max. The rest of us can do the county we live in, some big cities (ex: Minneapolis, MN is Hennepin, St. Paul, MN is Ramsey, Chicago is Cook, etc), and the counties around their home. That last one assumes they’ve lived somewhere for a while.
Nope. Just quizzed myself and could name 35 of California’s 58 off the top of my head. I could probably label most of those on a map, but the others are a mystery to me lol
Hawaii, Maui (to include Lanai and Molokai), Honolulu (City and County of…), and Kauai. Left off one. Kalawao County: Located on the island of Molokai, Kalawao County is unique as it’s administered by the State Department of Health and doesn’t function as a traditional governmental unit.
Nope. I probably could’ve done it in fourth grade when we had our state history and geography focus, but not now.
It’s interesting though, I’ve just been going through it in my head and I’m pretty sure I can do the entirety of North Jersey, but for South Jersey I only know a couple.
Comments
I’ve been to them all but I don’t have them all memorized.
I feel confident I could get north of 110 of the 120 counties in Kentucky.
No. I couldn’t even tell you how many counties are in my state.
I couldn’t probably put 2/3 roughly in the area of the state they belong.
Hell no! My home state had 67 and my current one has 58. I know my local surrounding counties, the counties with big cities, and a handful with memorable names.
Chuck Schumer can name all 62 counties and draw them from memory

Yes. There are only 36 in my state. Not like Virginia, Texas or Kentucky.
Most of them. Honestly though counties don’t really mean much for an ordinary traveller. County lines are usually in the middle of nowhere. Maybe over a river. You might pass a sign.
Yes and maybe.

Probably about 10 counties around the Chicagoland area, and about 5 counties around the areas of California where I’ve lived. Would be wild guessing on most of the other counties.
No. There’s like 90 counties in MN. I’d could probably name 25 of them.
There was a time when I knew all 39 in WA. I could confidently guess, but I wouldn’t say I know them all.
No chance. There’s 87 counties in my state. I could name a decent chunk of them but not place them all in the correct spot on the map.
I just looked it up.
My state has 15. I knew 5 of them.
Nope. Counties mostly only matter when you’re listening to the weather radio.
lol. Not even close. There’s so many in California
Hell no. I don’t even have all the SoCal counties memorized. SD, Riverside, Imperial, Orange, LA, San Bernardino… that’s my limit.
Hell no. There are over 60 and I have no need to memorize them.
I moved to New York State about 11 years ago, and only really know the ones immediately bordering mine.
I can name all 44 counties. I can identify most on a map, but not all
I can name mine and the surrounding counties. Capitals county and major city counties eg Ohio has Hamilton County for Cincinnati, Logan County for Toledo, Franklin County for Columbus and Cuyahoga County for Cleveland.
Georgia has 159 counties I can name 3
No, my state has 159 counties lol
Ct barely even has counties
Nope and I don’t know why it would be beneficial. Of course this varies from state to state but here there is no county level of government, they are pretty much only used for weather reports. It’s a small state, there’s no need to subdivide it.

53? counties. Nope.
No. There are 159 of them.
My state has 254 counties, so no absolutely not.
There’s 100 counties in my state. I can name and label some of them, but not all of them.
Hell no. There are more than 250 counties in this state and there is very little practical use to knowing any of them you don’t currently live in.
Maybe like 10.
I know more than the average resident of my state, but that’s because I work in government so there’s a work reason for me to know. Before that there were multiple counties – nay, entire regions of the state – that I have never heard of.
Yes. There are like 7 of them
Yes absolutely. But we’re small. Also, Connecticut functionally doesn’t use counties anyway so they’re mostly irrelevant besides assigning fun stereotypes to each one
I know all 67 counties but only because of a very specific reason tied to my work.
No, maybe just a dozen or so that are within a 2-hour drive, but there’s 62 in total. NY.
theres almost 100 in my state.
so definitely not.
I live in California. There’s at least 5 within 30 minutes driving distance in any direction
No, but I think if you gave me a list of all of them with 10 “impostors,” I could detect at least 8 or 9 of them, both in the state I lived as a child and the state I’ve lived in for most of adulthood. Lol no
My state has 102 and I spend my life in three counties.
Fuck no. There are like 90 counties. It’s good that they don’t make us spend an entire semester memorizing that.

We have 95 counties and I’d have to say no.
