AITA for ‘littering’?

r/

So I( 20F) was brushing my dogs outside (the main one in this story is my girl, Oso. she’s a great Pyrenees and german shepherd mix so they shed A LOT). I was sitting in my front yard, brushing her out and just talking to her because it’s one of the ways to keep her calm and still for me to actually brush her.

A kid(like 8ish) was going past on his bike and asked me what I was doing. I just explained that I was taking care of her fur. And he asked why she has weird scabs on her body, to which I explained that she has a skin condition that causes it. I had a pile of Oso’s fur in the grass beside me from where I had pulled it out of the comb.

I guess I didn’t see him mom walking up and she said that I had to pick up the fur immediately. To which I said no because constantly getting up and down while brushing her is hell, especially since I’m semi disabled and it hurts a bit to get up and down like that. The mom immediately got huffy and said she was gonna report me to the security guard across the street where he was watching a bowling alley since “the fur can blow onto their property” which I just said ok and went back to my brushing as she got huffy and told her son to get away from my dogs and that they are mean(note that neither of my dogs have done nothing aggressive yet. Just watching the two)

The kid freaked out and started to cry as he went back to his bike and the security guard across the street asked if they was OK and the mom said that I was abusing my dogs as she walked away??

Idk. I told one of my friends this story since I thought it was kinda funny and confusing and they said I should have picked up the fur when asked. Which I don’t get because it’s natural fur(don’t use liquid flea meds, or harsh bath soap on them because Oso’s skin condition is sensitive) and I’ve heard of people leaving fur out for birds so I do the same đź’€

Edit; my house is semi rural with woods and empty lots around me. The bowling alley is one of the only active business adjacent to my lot. The other nearest one is a pet store about a block down.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

    > I could be because I didn’t pick up the fur but I feel like dog fur is natural?? And how is that even abuse to my dogs đź’€

NTA animals shed, rabbits, deer, and all other animals shed something

YTA You do not have to get up and down if you bring a garbage bag with you to put the fur in while you brush your dog. My friend fills a large garbage bag when she brushes her malamute.

  5. BunniesnBroomsticks Avatar

Eh, I think it’s pretty rude to let your dog’s fur fly all over the neighborhood into other people’s yards, “natural” fur or not. The woman was pretty rude to you, but what she was asking isn’t unreasonable. You should put the fur into a trash bag as you brush instead of just leaving it loose.

  6. Rodarte500 Avatar

NTA… why would you put fur in non-decomposable bag? She was rude

  7. grandma4112 Avatar

Are you littering no and if you lived in a rural area you would be providing habitat supplies for birds and rodents. But you are not, you are in some sort of residential neighborhood that even has security. So you are leaving a mess others have to deal with and that’s rude. Grab a grocery bag and stick the handfuls in that and throw it away when done. And just fyi I have s newfoundland as a house person I get the fur. I also deal with significant arthritis in my feet so I get the idea that getting up and down is hard.

ESH except the kid and the dogs.

You: throw your fur away. Her: making her kid cry and trying to get a security guard to think you were abusing your dogs.

NTA birds like fur to build nests! not picking up the fur isn’t THAT serious

  10. totallyworkinghere Avatar

NTA. Biodegradable matter is not littering. If your neighbor doesn’t want anything flying onto her property, she can build a fence.

  11. Bindy12345 Avatar

    NTA. It’s fur.

YTA Eating hair is dangerous for animals, including your dogs. It’s such a small effort to clean up after you groomed your dogs.

  13. microwavable22 Avatar

    NTA mostly

But please don’t leave dog hair outside if you use flea treatments. Birds will use this in their nests and it can kill the chicks as the flea treatments remains in their fur.

  14. PointlessUnicorn337 Avatar

Does this women call the police every time a bird feather drifts in to her yard? NTA, and from a dog groomer, thank you for taking care of your dogs’ coats!

  15. Acheloma Avatar

Semi rural, nah youre NTA. If you were in a dense city itd be a bit different, but even then I wouldnt call it littering. We had great pyr livestock guardian dogs and it was always really fun to watch the birds come collect the fur and use it for their nests; for years a good number of the nests Id see around our property had white fur lining them 🙂

  16. ChickenDinner119 Avatar

I’m inclined to say yes. The logic that fur is natural only gets you so far. Their crap is also natural, but no decent person leaves their dogs crap around. Brushing your dog leaves a significant amount of fur; which is why I assume you do it outside? After a good brushing, I have enough fur that I could mold into another of my dog. It doesn’t just disappear just because you can’t see it anymore. It’s not too hard to take a plastic shopping bag with you and put the fur balls in a bag to take back inside and put in the trash when done. There’s is no excuse for being rude, but also, have a little consideration for your neighbors, too?

  17. BB808BB Avatar

YTA. Why do you think it’s ok for fur to blow into neighbors property. Someone is going to eventually have to clean it up but you pretend out of sight out of mind and it’s someone’s else’s problem.

  18. lailabeautiful Avatar

NTA. You were just brushing your dog, not dumping trash. Natural fur isn’t harmful, and your explanation makes total sense. That mom overreacted big time

  19. LEANiscrack Avatar

    ESH everyone is weird.
Leaving out fur means that you let a little bit behind. Not that you leave the amount those dogs shed and in a city.
Birds wont use all of it if at all in a city.

Everyone in this story just seems to not like other humans, weird and antisocial behavior all around.

  20. BennyTheTraitor Avatar

Nta, birds use untreated dog hair for nesting materials and warmth. Why would you put something that naturally comes from an animal and is used by other animals in a plastic bag to pollute the world?

  21. IHaveBoxerDogs Avatar

If the fur was actually blowing onto someone’s property that’s one thing. But complaining because it “could” blow onto the bowling alley’s property is pretty lame. She was just being bossy. NTA
