California and the garage fridge is newer than the kitchen fridge. Also have a garage freezer the size of a Volkswagen. My wife loves Costco and Winco, so here we are.
New York. No, we didn’t have a garage and the basement was unfinished and creepy and we never went down there except to do laundry. I can’t think of anything we would have put in a second fridge or freezer anyway
washington and yes, kinda. we didn’t my whole life growing up but about 3 years ago we got a mini fridge from somewhere and we put it in the garage and use it for beer
Arizona and I had a garage freezer. Until it blew the GFI and stopped working in July. Had like 40lbs of rotten meat before we discovered it. Never again
In North Carolina I had several friends who did. In Oregon I know one person with a back porch fridge but I think that’s because they live with lots of roommates so genuinely need more fridge space. I know someone else with a dining room mini-fridge for drinks but that seems a slightly different concept.
The traditional garage fridge as I remember it was used for sodas or as food storage for things that wouldn’t be cooked right away.
Washington, and yes, I have both a full size fridge and a mini fridge in the garage, as well as a huge freezer. My parents always had both as well (they actually have two full size garage fridges right now, but one they mostly just plug in when they have visitors).
NM and yes. Originally it was our main fridge years back, but now it’s a second pantry for soda and nonperishables that don’t mind how hot it gets in the summers. We don’t need it plugged in.
Oregon and no, I’m in an apartment. Grew up in Minnesota and also no because the garage would typically be colder than a refrigerator for like five months out of the year. We kept sodas on a shelf in the garage and it was only ever an issue when it got too cold and they exploded.
Colorado, yes, we call it The Party Fridge and it’s covered in stickers. We literally buy stickers on vacations to bring home and put on this old fridge in the basement. And we never host parties, so no clue why it’s The Party Fridge.
Iowa. My garage is detached (a separate structure from my house) and I don’t have a fridge in it, but I do have a spare fridge in my basement and it holds beverages only. When I moved here, I brought the fridge from my old house, but my new house also had a nicer fridge, so the old house fridge went to the basement. That was 18 years ago and it is still down there and still working.
NH and yes- small fridge in the garage for beer/water etc. and a full “ meat” freezer in the basement for butchered chicken and beef. Used to be used for venison but I don’t hunt any longer.
Illinois, grew up with a kitchen fridge, a garage fridge, and a basement fridge, as well as a mini fridge in the UP upstairs/third floor bar area. Still live in Illinois now but I moved out of my parents house & we have a detached garage now so we don’t keep a fridge in there, but we do have the kitchen fridge and then in our foyer we have a large bar-back glass front fridge, which sits next to an extra fridge that’s not plugged in that our landlord never picked up after the kitchen fridge was replaced.
Pennsylvania. We don’t have a garage, but my mom’s old house had two freezers, my grandparents ground floor had one as well (they didn’t have a basement). My dad has a fridge in his basement but no freezer
We have a basement freezer for venison and wild turkey that my husband has harvested. He’s a native North Carolinian. We always had a porch refrigerator for drinks growing up in Arizona.
From PA, we had a basement fridge. However in the winter, especially around the holidays, the garage itself would become a fridge for drinks and for holiday food (in coolers with no ice – so critters wouldn’t show up.
I live in San Antonio now. When we had the big freeze a couple years ago and people we talking about how much food they had to throw away because of power outages I got two reactions when I asked them why they didn’t just transfer the stuff to coolers in their garageto kkep cold/frozen – either sudden realization that had been an option or doubling down that was unsafe (I guess because the news was talking about how grocery stores had to do it and maybe they didn’t make the connection to camping).
I should also mention that in Texas we do have a garage freezer, we also have a small beverage cooler in the kitchen.
Indiana and yes we have a refrigerator in the garage. It comes in handy for family get togethers, especially like Thanksgiving with so much food and drinks. We have a chest freezer in the basement
Connecticut and we had one growing up (for venison and bulk bread/snacks from the Hostess outlet store). Now in SC and we have a fridge and a full size freezer in the garage (3 kids)
I grew up in California and in Idaho. Garage fridges weren’t very common but I remember thinking the few people I knew that had them were rich! I live in Indiana now with my husband (who grew up here) and we have a garage fridge. It was a “necessity” in his eyes. And we didn’t even have to be rich. I got ours on fb marketplace for like $80 lol.
Oregon, and yes. Buying my house, and upgrading the fridge so I could move the old one into the garage felt like the quintessential suburban middle-class achievement. And having the extra fridge is actually wonderful. I keep it full of beverages when I have houseguests, the freezer full of soup and meat and four kinds of frozen treats, and during the holidays, I mostly empty it out to make room for all the leftovers from the big meals.
We have a garage freezer, because the kitchen freezer can only hold so much venison. Also really handy if you know someone who raises cattle and you want to buy 1/4 or 1/2 a cow.
Minnesota. The only reason we have one is because we had bed bugs several years ago, and whatever couldn’t go through the heat treatment got frozen for a week. We got it for $50 on Craigslist.
CA and yes but mostly because we had a fridge when we moved into this house that also had a fridge. The garage one is water, bottles of iced tea, and it’s where my adult kids put the leftovers they get from restaurants.
Connecticut here. So we had a garage freezer. You have to go outside and through the big door to access the garage. The thing is the garage door opener is really old, like 70s old (sears brand) and the wiring in our house is pretty old. One day in the summer we discovered our garage wouldn’t open, this wasn’t a problem because we don’t use our garage to store our car. So we waited a bit tried to open the door a couple different ways, then my husband just broke the window. Well turns out a fuse blew or whatever and the smell that smelled out of the garage was unforgettable. I’m not sure how many days we waited or how long it was stuck for, but whew.
We had one in Ohio and in Nevada. Growing up we had a chest freezer in the unattached garage. In Ohio, I’m not sure if garage fridges were common or not, but a second fridge or freezer in the basement was very common where I grew up.
Wisconsin. No, because for much of the year the garage fridge would be warmer than the garage. In winter, I have to remember to bring the soda cans in lest they explode.
A lot of people do have a second/basement fridge, though.
NC, and yes. 41 year old Kenmore. Our very first refrigerator we bought after getting married. We brought it with us after moving and I stuck it in my garage for sodas, water, etc “till it died”. That was 1998 and it’s still going strong. Never had a repair call on it.
Tennessee. We do not because we have a car port and no garage. We do have a friend who has one and we do have a deep freeze in the basement for meats and such.
PA. I don’t have a garage to have a garage fridge, but I do have a basement fridge.
It’s nice when I am working outside or something and I want to get a quick drink without having to take my shoes off, don’t want to track dirt upstairs through the living room and kitchen, I just go to the basement fridge. If I track in some dirt in the basement it’s not a big deal. I do sweep it up eventually of course, but it’s not as pertinent to us as keeping the upstairs clean is.
Originally from MI, we had a fridge and extra freezer in the garage. The best part of winter is that the whole garage gets cold, so you can put dood out there too.
Only in the winter in the garage. Our garage becomes the fridge once it gets cold out. Larger refrigerated items stay on a table in The garage along with beer, wine and beverages.
Georgia and I have one in the shop. My parents bought it when they built the shop in the early 90s and the fridge was already old then. Mostly keep bottles of water and Gatorade, popsicles in the summer but occasionally it’s got fish that need to be fried, a whole turkey to be fried during the Christmas holidays and another wild game meat that we grill.
I have lived in multiple states and garage fridges were always a thing if you have the space. My current garage fits 2 vehicles and some shelves, there’s just nowhere to fit a fridge. Or I would have one.
Minnesota. Yes. Basement fridge. My wife is a champion gardener so our freezer gets filled up with roasted tomatoes, tomato sauce, 2 dozen jars of pesto, frozen greens (collards, kale, etc.). Fridge gets used for sodas, beer, leftovers that it might take a couple days to eat, etc.
Grew up in California and yes. Always have since I was a kid. Originally from Oklahoma and my family has a porch fridge and a freezer that’s just for venison after hunting season.
Florida. Most people here have one (at least the people I know). Tbh we’d probably have one if we still had a garage. Right now we have a second, cheaper fridge in the living room and a deep freezer in the patio.
It is in the rec room and used to hold Cokes and root beer for teens. It now holds beer for dad. For some reason mom’s wine doesn’t travel well and it is stored upstairs.
Yes, Colorado. But it ain’t cheap. My father was a hunter, and fisherman always had fresh meat and whole venison (i mightve spelled that wrong) our garage flash freezer was for all our extra meat.
Inside fridge were for perishables that needed to be eaten obviously by the use by date. Our inside fridge is also the OG fridge we bought the house with. Shitter is tiny but runs great 😂 just needed more food at the time for a family of 5.
Now Ive taken over the house with my roommate, 2 cousins, husband and baby. The extra storage is nice but a bigger fridge would also be nove
Louisiana and no garage, no spare freezer or refrigerator. If you’ve ever had to clean rotten food out of one refrigerator after a week with no power it won’t incentivize you to ever have a second.
Georgia, we did have one until it died recently. We replaced it with a freezer to stock up before the price of all the meat went up during this awful administration.
