I was born and raised in Vietnam until I moved to live in South Korea in October 2023. In South Korea, there is a concept called a “multicultural family“ (다문화 가족) which refers to a family where either the father or the mother does not hold South Korean citizenship. On social media, you can see many families like this, but most are composed of white women or other Europeans. In reality, the number of South Koreans married to Vietnamese people has always been much higher compared to families with a father or mother from other countries (similarly with Cambodia, Thailand, etc.). This has also contributed to the increase of mixed individuals in South Korea, including me. I feel that people like me are often overlooked, because except for South Korea and Vietnam, there is very little information about our existence on social media platforms.
I’m mixed Vietnamese-Korean, moved to Korea in 2023, and I’m the only Vietnamese student in the school. AMA
