When a person has to flee their home due to a war, and they seek asylum in another country because of it, what happens if they still owed money on the home they had to leave?

I was just talking about the war in Ukraine with a coworker of mine, and it got me thinking about those who were living a normal life beforehand but had it brutally uprooted. They had a home, had a mortgage and a career, what happens when they’re forced to leave because they could be killed if they stay? I can’t imagine how devastated someone must be if they had their whole life uprooted because of something totally out of their control.
