I can’t but notice there are many people who hate wearing seatbelts and would sometimes even fake locking it in when they are asked to do that
And it’s the same about any kind of seatbelt. Car, airplane, whatever. Jeez, I’ve seen people literally fight with flight attendant about this
It’s not some kind of hard task, it doesn’t take anything from them, it’s a thing for their safety. Literally a thing for their benefit! So.. why?

Don’t overthink it. They’re unintelligent.
Most stupid decisions can boil down to lack of education
Shhhh, let nature take it’s course.
And to answer your question: Some people value their momentary comfort more than their own safety/wellbeing.
How can they keep their belts off with that incessant dinging most cars do nowadays until the belt is buckled in?!?! That’s of course aside from being stipid not wearing one to begin with.
My ex girlfriend didn’t want to wrinkle her dress. I asked if she thought the windshield might wrinkle her face.
Some people don’t like being told what to do and they don’t like the idea of someone else knowing more than they do.
Hank Green recently did a video on the topic and called the phenomenon by the label Skeptical Hedonism:

I don’t agree with everything he says there, but there is some truth there.
I think he didn’t emphasize enough how much of that is not due to the extra steps involved in putting on a seatbelt, but the fact that they didn’t come up with the idea.
The same people who skip important safety steps like seatbelts will at the same time engage in unnecessary rituals and behavior born out of misconceptions and superstition in the name of safety.
It is not always about the effort of the task but the idea that you are a sheep who just follows along with what the mad tells you to do that puts some people off.
People can be really insecure about how bad they are at things and how little they know that they hate the idea of following the advice of experts.
They will buy essential oils rather than prove medicine that might be cheaper, because they feel empowered by the idea of knowing better.
They will make up stories about fear of being trapped inside a car sinking in the water and that they prefer being thrown clear of an accident, because going against the mainstream makes them feel smart.
They will say that they are good drivers as if their driving skills are the ones that will make the difference when they get T-boned by a drunk running a red light.
They will say that it is only a short ride when those are the ones where the most accidents happen.
Sometimes they are just lazy and try to justify it, sometimes they are stupid and insecure and try to make themselves feel better and sometimes they just really are in denial about the risk of everyday actions and their own mortality and will not take steps to lessen the impact of things that they don’t want to believe can happen.
It made my SO claustrophobic.
A lot of people are dumber than you think.
My ex refused to wear a seatbelt in the car because she was terrified that the car would get submerged, and she’d be unable to get the seatbelt off.
Don’t even bother providing rational arguments, it’s not worth your breath. I’ve tried them all, I never was able to convince her.
I know a guy who thinks seatbelts are a myth and don’t actually save lives. No, he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.
One, they lack the ability to think logically or critically.
Two, they don’t understand Newton’s first law of motion.
Three, they will refuse to learn or understand how they are putting their life on the line, until it’s too late.
Because they’re free thinkers that don’t actually think
