So JN sold the house from underneath us, she got money out of it. Will be buying us a 34k trailer and just happened to purchase a car yesterday without my knowledge. Which I knew she was looking at cars. Did not know she bought one. Paid full cash. Forged my signature and the car wasn’t even given to me and we’re for some reason not allowed to get it. So I thought about filing police reports. I don’t want the car, I didn’t have a say in the car. And the excuse is “I was unavailable” despite them knowing my work schedule. The family has said I’m overreacting and I need to be grateful for them getting me a car. I told them. “Sorry I’m not very grateful for you illegally signing a car into my name that I had nothing to do with or any knowledge of until after it was done.” Am I overreacting? Am I in the wrong for wanting to file a police report and prevent further issues in the future? JN could be arrested for it. Apparently.

Call police. Immediately. Also call the car dealership and let them know. Immediately. I mean, did they check I’d or anything?
If your name is on it you’re responsible for insurance, property taxes if required, maintenance and upkeep. Plus if she whizzes by on this one, she’ll likely do it again.
Of course you go to the police.
If MIL didn’t want to be arrested she shouldn’t have committed fraud.
seriously, you need to go to the police. this is fraud and you need to get out in front of this now before something happens to/with the vehicle and you end up on the hook for it.
You absolutely need to file a police report. She will continue to do stuff like this.
Yeah. Police. She needs consequences. If you don’t react appropriately, not only is she likely gonna keep doing it, but she’ll probably escalate.
Hey so unless you report that, you’re legally responsible for it.
You need to call the cops immediately. This is fraud.
Saw your comment about it being a family dealership.
Go to the police and tell them not only did she forge your signature but the dealership knew it was forged and allowed it.
She hits someone/something, its legally your car. She breaks a law, its your car. She abadoneds it, its your car.
And your fees.
Please please please go report that to the police to at least get it out of your name. If it wasn’t a “big” deal they wouldn’t have paid cash and put it in your name. There is a reason its not in hers. File a report. Now.
I mean as long as you do nothing it’s your car and if anything goes wrong you are responsible for it and held accountable. The police doesn’t care she is driving it. If this is not the moment you decided enough is enough there isn’t really anything I think will fix you.
MIL gets into an accident, hurts a kid. OP is “legally” the owner of the car. See where this is going? OP file with the police.
OP, please go to the police. This is fraud and you need to get out in front of this. JN sold a house out from underneath you, she’s “buying you” (I seriously question that!) a $34k trailer, and she forged your name on a car that wasn’t given to you, and you’re not allowed too get! If she gets away with this this time, you can count on more times.
She needs to be held accountable for FRAUD and the dealership should be held accountable too. They willingly let her sign when they knew she wasn’t you.
Call the police. Fuck your MIL and family. They are enablers.
It’s not overreacting to have an issue with someone forging your signature. You may have been unavailable, but it’s still a legal decision made on your behalf without you there. You deserve to know what you’re signing and to not have people treat signing your name as NBD.
She’s committed identity fraud. You’re not overreacting. Contact the police immediately.
File the fucking report. Both the dealership and her are liable here
Since “it’s your car “, I’d take it home with me or better yet, sell it. After all it is YOUR car
Yes, I’m a petty bitch
The amount of things that are crazy with everything you’ve said is mind boggling. I think you might be so used to these crazy people that it isn’t registering. You mentioned in your last post that you were moving out. Have you? I really think you need to report this. It sounds like this whole family is happy to use you and walk all over you. Don’t focus on anything they need. They aren’t your responsibility. Let them devour each other and get out while you can. Focus your energy on yourself and baby and getting you both to a more peaceful life. I assure you that if you don’t start taking action, this situation will only continue to get worse.
She has two options. Arrested, or hand the car over. Personally I’d call the cops about fraud and forgery
Go to the police. Now. Fraud.
Forgery is a felony.
Get a lawyer today!
You could report the car as stolen, it’s in your name after all.
If anything you’re under reacting
Nope. File the police reports and lock down your information.
File. Being on the title makes you legally responsible for that car. Hit and run? They’ll find you and you’ll have to pay for it. Ask me how I know.
And who’s insured this vehicle? As the owner, you’re responsible no matter who’s driving. You need to deal with this situation asap!
I used to work for the DMV in New York State. You are so severely under reacting. If you live in the US, please contact your local DMV and ask them how you should proceed… they’ll probably advise you to call the police non emergency line and go from there. You also need to decide if you want the car to sell or just out of your name, though the decision might not be up to you and probably will be decided by a judge. This is a fairly serious crime
I think you should file a police report, but make sure you’ll be able to cut off contact with MIL and possibly that entire side of the family. She’s going to be angry and act like YOU’VE done something wrong, even though she’s the one who has committed fraud. If you’re dependent on her for housing, she will absolutely retaliate.
You are severely UNDER reacting.
File a police report. This isfraud pure and simple. You need a paper trail in case she does anything else that’s devious.
As others have said, you are severely underreacting!
File a police report. Who did she buy the car from? They need to be notified. If it was a dealership of any kind then they committed fraud as well, for not verifying the person signing was legitimate.
Lock down your SS# – put a flag on your credit reports.
Unless there are missing missing reasons, OP, you are not adulting very well. Here are my concerns.
If you have no title to the house, the owners have no reason to consult you.
Did she borrow your license and pass it off as hers? Is she known at the family’s dealership, and using your name was outright known not to be you signing?
You’ve “heard” they paid cash. What if they didn’t? What if they took an expensive loan and your credit tanks when you unknowingly miss payments?
They “should” have presented a valid insurance card. What if they didn’t have to? What if that vehicle is uninsured? And there’s an accident? You’re 100% responsible.
OP, please report this fraud. The nicest reason I can think of for them doing this is that someone owes back child support or a bankruptcy. And someone could lose that car as an asset. I can think of some dark reasons too.
I’m with everyone: under reacting. Yes you do want the car, you can resell it and recoup money for loss time and aggravation. File a police report. This is a teachable moment. Lock down your credit with passwords. It’ll make it harder for her to access your identity. Good luck!
You are underreacting and you need to go to the police
This makes no sense.
Cops, now.
You are underreacting. A car titled in your name is a liability to you. If she (or anyone else) drives it and kills someone in an accident, you can still legally be on the hook when the car is titled in your name.
You can be responsible for any tickets, tows, etc when it is titled in your name.
Is it insured? With decent limits?
Aye , as an insurance professional this is a nightmare to me.
File a police report today and lock all of your credit down.
Fraud. Cops. Jail.
You should have filed that police report yesterday
Either cops or sell it. 🤣
That felony fraud. Call the police.
Go file the police report right now.
GO TO THE POLICE
What happens when she wrecks it and someone gets hurt. You would be liable. This is about control, her over you. Take the control back and go to the cops
