It’s not that shocking, the basis would already be present in the data sets they used to train these things, so it’s just picking up and reflecting the pattern that’s already there.
The article mentions that they’ve identified and are working to address the issue. One of the biggest benefits from using centralized systems is that you can correct it and suddenly millions of people are having a better outcome. Fixing the bias in the existing set of human doctors takes decades or even centuries as you have to build a cadre of empathic teachers who build a new host of better students that eventually push out the bad professionals.
Granted centralized systems also allow someone to properly break the system for everyone which may be a bigger concern in the current political climate.
Upsetting but not surprising. The article does say they’re working on it so I guess I’ll hold out some hope that these AI tools will be of more help eventually. At least there’s more proof of this bias. Water is wet, yes, but we also have to prove it and cite sources.

Well at least there’s confirmation. AI learns from existing material, and the existing material leans towards male bias… So…
In other news: Water found to be wet. More at 11.

I mean… that’s their training lol
Wow, just like the real thing
no DUH, its Bayes Theorem.
If most of the ‘states’ you train it on are of men discrediting women and minorities, well no duh the equation is going to reflect that
