My understanding is that a lot of people oppose Elon Musk funding things because he is not elected, but, do liberals think the same thing about George Soros? I think Soros has funded many for ex Attorney General races around USA for decades, do liberals think it is ok that Soros funds things?

liberal view on things?

Soros isn’t even close to being involved in the government as much as Musk is.
George Soros is a billionaire who donates to liberal causes and supports democratic movements worldwide. So of course the far right hates him (often with anti-Semitic overtones). This is not in the same ballpark of an unelected person having large scale control of a government. This question is pure whataboutism.
I think the main reason most people that oppose Musk funding things oppose it because he funds objectively terrible things and not really on principle. People also hate Musk because he’s an unelected guy currently given access to all govt data, authority to destroy govt systems, etc.
I would prefer that no one be able to spend more than $100 or so on elections in a year. I don’t know how you limit Russia, Musk, etc. from just funding podcasters and similar to campaign for them but that’s also an issue.
Which government position does George Soros hold?
I don’t really mind political donations, I think it’s inevitable and honestly many issues need more funding and if it comes down to sometimes private individuals contributing, whatever i don’t think that’s a huge problem comparatively.
But do you honestly think all Musk is doing is funding things? Haven’t you seen him hanging out in the oval office talking to the press as if he was a co-head of the government? Are you not aware of DOGE that is going into government facilities and doing who knows what with basically zero supervision? Are you not aware that Tesla has gotten a number of new government contracts while said government also works to tear down infrastructure usable by Tesla competitors? It’s far from just “funding things” as you put it. It’s just that we are now happy when his attempts to fund things fails (like the Wisconsin case) because of all the other shit he has been doing. He is acting against the best interests of this country, so I’m going to be opposed to every single thing he does.
Yes, fuck George Soros too. Billionaires have outsized influence that is entirely undue to them. They shouldn’t be allowed to donate, or fund causes beyond what the normal person is able to on a yearly basis. That being said we can’t pretend like Elon Musk is not the current, much larger threat to the United States than other billionaires.
Musk is doing a lot more than simply funding campaigns. We don’t care if he simply donates to Trump. That would be a typical billionaire doing billionaire things. Musk is constantly spewing and proliferating literal Nazi propaganda.
Soros doesn’t actually do 90% of the things the right accuses him of. He is not in the same universe as Musk.
Show me the picture of Soros cutting checks for a million dollars to people pledging to vote how Soros dictates.
> My understanding is that a lot of people oppose Elon Musk funding things because he is not elected..
No, I’d say we primarily oppose him funding things because of his fascism.
Also, trying to draw an equivalency between Musk and Soros is extremely weak and just makes it look like you inhale right-wing propaganda.
It’s not about musk “funding things”. The system is broke my friend.
The fact that Elon Musk is saying “release your voting record —> come to my after party —> I’ll give you a million dollars” is clear bribery. lol. I’m guaranteeing you they didn’t give someone who voted democrat a million dollars lol.
My concern is the slippery slope this leads to. Can Walmart say, “any employees who voted for Trump, release your record —> come to the management after party —> you are eligible for a promotion or extra raise”?
I would call a spade a spade if Soros did that crap. It’s annoying and unbearable.
Soros has never bought votes. Soros doesn’t pay people to show up at events. Soros might fund campaigns, but that puts him in the company of thousands of wealth Republicans doing the exact same thing.
Where Soros really went wrong was back in the 90’s when he helped fund the MoveOn organization after Republicans had hounded Clinton for years with a special prosecutor to try and find criminal acts in real estate.
None were found.
But that didn’t stop the investigation. Instead, they pivoted to sex scandals.
That’s it. That’s the entire list of offenses.
Meanwhile Elon has:
Fired or shut down the departments of government agencies regulating and / or investigating him. This can’t be stressed enough. I mean, if you really understood the meaning of this crime, alone, would you have even posted the question?
I don’t think so.
And that’s the problem. Lack of information, likely from siloed / reality bubble existence. Lack of the ability to reason about critical issues, or take all the facts in to consideration when making a decision.
Also, I would flip this around. Why do republicans seem to have such a problem with Soros, and yet seem to be so ok with Elon Musk having a much more prominent role in running things as a wealthy unelected individual?
George Soros funds some liberal causes and contributes to some Democratic politicians. There are many people like him on the right and the left to do these types of things.
However, this is just a false equivalency. There’s a reason the name that always gets raised is George Soros. Partially that’s because he’s a Jew, but it’s also because he’s the default name the right brings up anytime you mention the dozens and dozens of right wing billionaires donating to Republicans and conservative causes.
Just the Koch Brothers network alone donates far more than George Soros does and they donate too much more insidious causes. You have to also look at the Wilkes Brothers and Sheldon Adelson and on and on and on and on.
But Elon Musk is different than all of this. There is no equivalent to an unelected billionaire drug addict showing up and actually working in the government by deploying his 20 something year old tech boy idiots. Neither George Soros or Charles Koch for that matter ran around, sucking up private information and breaking the law and firing federal employees for no legitimate reason.
It is trivially easy to figure out dozens upon dozens of things Elon Musk has done in the last couple of weeks that are unprecedented and frankly illegal.
There is no comparison to be made here.
I think when you say “funding things” you mean his recent campaigns at vote buying? Like his million dollar give away or going door to door offering $100 for people’s votes?
I oppose that because it’s tawdry and corrupt.
Liberals are against the Citizens United decision and want corporate and billionaire dollars out of elections, but since we don’t live in this reality, liberals aren’t going to shoot themselves in the foot and say it’s okay to have only billionaires fund Republican candidates. I know you think you’re smart doing a gotcha, but let’s put on a thinking cap for a minute.
What government department was created purely to give George Soros authority over the government? Please tell me.
