It’s a shakedown and cudgel for enforcing loyalty and compliance, just like everything else he does.

  2. Real-Inspector3060 Avatar

Shows you how much he actually cares about the common man. His friends, who are the biggest abusers of H1B, will get exempted, and nothing will change.

its something that kings have always done Patronage.

  7. kevendo Avatar

I think the exemption is just as illegal as the fee hike itself.

Congress alone has this power. Trump is once again being allowed to fabricate laws by fiat, and it has to stop.

  8. jpmeyer12751 Avatar

Recall that the Supreme Court has said that a President’s motives may not be examined by courts when considering whether an act was official or unofficial. So, a President can sell official actions as long as he doesn’t say so publicly. Even Justices Barrett thought that part of the immunity decision was a bridge too far.

  9. Boyhowdy107 Avatar

It’s a clear path to get more bribes and force more control over private businesses.

I have heard some argue that H1B is abused by companies and that they are overlooking qualified American grads for immigrants they can control. I’m open to that argument and even open to the idea of making H1B more expensive. There should be a debate about the best way to reform this by lawmakers. $100k a year though is a sledgehammer rather than a nudge, and I don’t trust this administration to not use this rule and their sole ability to offer exemptions in an exploitative way.

  10. OrilliaBridge Avatar
  11. salter77 Avatar

I actually see a lot of people (I guess that Americans) more annoyed about the exemption than the fee. Many actually think that something should be made to control H1B “abuse” but not sure if just a plain “fee” is the right path.

I’m not American but I also have the impression that many companies are abusing H1B visas to try to hire cheaper and more compliant workers from outside.

The “exemption” seems like a way to give special treatment to friends.

  12. Krow101 Avatar

    Big money, big money…. c’mon.

  13. New_Knowledge_5702 Avatar

He won’t charge maga run companies or CEOs but will try to hand select which ones are exempt. His laws are only for those he wants them to be. Clown

  14. nextstoq Avatar

Why is the political system in the US set up so 1 person can have so much power and invoke so many questionable rules single handedly. It’s like a democratically elected despot.
Would be funny if it wasn’t so sad

  15. MKMK123456 Avatar

I think it’s an official act so is immune.

In an unrelated piece of news , tech companies donations and business deals with current administration members have gone up.

  28. Another_Random_Chap Avatar

Trump will always give the option for people to pay their around things. That’s how he thinks – money above everything.

  29. Wuthering_depths Avatar

This is how he operates and has always operated. Raise up the stick and wait for subservience. Those that pay up in some way will be exempt.

    A shakedown in other words.

  30. mayhem6 Avatar

From an authoritarian wanna be’s perspective it’s genius. He can approve only the companies who are ‘friendly’ to him as well as donate to his PACs or even directly to him – under the table (at least until he secures his permanent president status he’s aiming for). Since it’s all about profits for American capitalists, they will see it as the cost of doing business. They have no morals or loyalty to America, it’s all about that cold hard cash, hon!

  31. squigs Avatar

It seems unusual that the executive should be the one to decide exceptions. Surely the president should be focussing on other matters than individual visas.

It’s clearly a power grab, but I think they’re just testing the waters. If they can give the president defacto powers to handle this, what else can they do?

  32. ihavenoidea12345678 Avatar

I will be sad if my employer bends the knee.

I’m thinking most companies will just scale back hiring and try to lay low.

Another nail in coffin for the economy.

  33. jivjov Avatar

Just business as usual for this administration — instead of a clear and consistent set of rules that apply equally, the personal whims of those in charge get to factor in too

  34. tinydevl Avatar

    …it’s all about dat grift….bout dat grift….

The TNC crime syndicate is openly running this country, aided and abetted by a totally corrupt SCOTUS and GOP.

  35. johnnybna Avatar

All it takes is a “donation” of the right size to trump’s off shore bank accounts and voilà! No more H1B problems.

  36. Good_Entertainer9383 Avatar

One of the more creative cases of this dude using the power of the state to benefit himself and allies. What’s to stop him from soliciting donations to his cryptocurrency in exchange for waiving H1B fees? It’s what I would do if I was wildly corrupt.

  37. zeeper25 Avatar

Only the companies that bribe him, small businesses are on their own

He’s going to use this to coerce social media into heavily restricting left-leaning political speech.

  55. Daveit4later Avatar

If so, then it’s a concerted effort to crush small businesses, increasing monopolies, which will lead to uncheckes price gouging aka…. inflation.

  57. Remarkable_Quit_3545 Avatar

Every decision he’s made he gets to decide who it does and doesn’t affect. No one speaks out against it, so I guess that makes it ok.

And I’m sure the ones that are exempt from this fee are paying him in “other ways”.

  58. ReasonablyConfused Avatar

    Kleptocracy in plain sight.

  59. kissesandknivess Avatar

It isn’t policy, it’s a protection racket. Pay the boss and you’re safe, don’t pay and you get crushed. That’s not a fee hike, that’s mob rule

How big a bribe donation does Trump need to make that happen?

  62. timeforgeneralstrike Avatar

I’ve been searching for examples of a more corrupt government in any country at any time in history. The US is truly being run by a second rate mob boss. It’s a pure extortion racket at this point.

It’s the same as his tariff policy. Companies and countries can bribe their way out of the orange clown’s policies. This is the entire point of his agenda. He’s lining his pockets by using the power of the office.

  74. unicornlocostacos Avatar

Literally extortion. You’re all fucked! Unless you bribe me…

I think it would be great if Congress would become functional again and do its job to set out the laws that we should follow to make us a successful society.

  76. Rurumo666 Avatar

Look folks, his nickname has been Don the Con since the 1980s, his only game is grifting and racketeering, always has been. 90% of all Trump Org employees are H1b visa holders, and that has been a well known fact since he ran the first time, yet he still sold the idea of MAGA to the low IQ lemming horde that put him in office twice. Trump’s actions are and always have been totally antithetical to the idiotic words coming out of his mouth. Do you MAGAs actually think Trump will pay $100k for each of his H1b workers, get a grip.

  77. elconquistador1985 Avatar

It’s grift and bribery, plain and simple.

That’s the way Trump operates. You can pay $100k per year or you can bribe Trump instead, probably by buying Trump coin.

Add it to the pile of things he should be impeached for.

  78. Griffie Avatar

    Fascist power grab

  79. johnqpublic81 Avatar

Remember when Republicans used to bitch about the government picking winners and losers.

This fee combined with Trump Coin means that Trump is going to brazenly enrich himself by offering a discount for buying his bribe coin. I don’t know how Trump supporters are okay with this.

  80. art-is-t Avatar

This is not a democracy anymore

  81. BeKindBabies Avatar

More fascist corruption. The fascism is now, not later. We’ve already arrived.

    He’s a dictator.

  82. GreyBeardEng Avatar

In other countries that would call that corruption.

  83. strangedaze23 Avatar

It’s a grift. It is a tool for him to get companies in line. Do x I exempt you don’t do it I won’t.

That’s all it is. He is a swindler. The only way he gets his way is through coercion. That’s his “art of the deal.” Any sane nation with sane politicians would stop it in its tracks.

  84. Wonderer23 Avatar

I think that with the supreme court firmly up his ass, he can do anything he wants.

  85. cougar618 Avatar

  86. Realistic_Loss3534 Avatar

I wonder what those companies have promised in return for that benefit

  87. NotMyName_3 Avatar

I read the US starts trade negotiations with India on Tuesday of next week. It’s convenient that he announced the increase in H1-B visa fees on Friday. I’m of the opinion this will grab Modi’s attention more than the increased tariffs on Indian goods coming into this country.

  88. GoingNutCracken Avatar

Another way for him to grift.

Pay for play, obviously. Everything he does is a move to increase power and money. This is what he does, and whatever we might say about his intelligence, he is actually quite good at it.

  94. Dihydrogen-monoxyde Avatar

    You’re panicking for nothing:

That’s something that can be most likely discussed at Mar El Lago for a mere $5 million a pop dinner.

Also, if a company were to buy $50 millions worth of Trump coins, that would be completely unrelated.

People that say that 50% of PhDs in the US are foreign born and may contribute to research and the economy are grossly exaggerating. It’s barely 43%.

Some mom and pop shops were created by immigrants or their children, but including NVDIA, Google, Tesla, Space X, Apple, Costco, etc is just dishonest propaganda.

  95. itscoldcase Avatar

  96. TheWiseOne1234 Avatar

  100. Mikebones1184 Avatar

    Its corruption. Nothing new.

  101. Beta_Nerdy Avatar

A judge will order this program fee to stop sometime next week. Trump has no power to order this to happen.

  102. redsandsfort Avatar

It makes sense and is pretty smart. It’s important to have this kind of exemption so that businesses have a way to not pay for 100 Visas at $100,000 each, totalling $10 million.

Instead, they can simply buy $1,000,000 in Trump Crypto or book a month stay at Mar-a-Lago instead.

The companies save $9 million, so everyone wins.

  103. NoaNeumann Avatar

  105. Osirus1156 Avatar

I think it’s another in a long line of Republican grifts that his voters are again too stupid to understand. They will use it in every argument saying Trump is saving American jobs blah blah blah whereas in reality literally nothing will change because every CEO will give him a little handy and a couple million for the exemption.

  106. AustinLurkerDude Avatar

I like the new changes. The previous laws made bribery and grifting too complicated. This is a lot clearer and easier to understand.

  107. heloder85 Avatar

The dumbasses who kept bleating on about the “Biden Crime Family” are, naturally, silent as the grave when it comes to the Trump administration, which is literally being run like the mob.

    More projection…

  108. Dave_A480 Avatar

Mafia rules… Not in any sense conservative….

  109. Tronn3000 Avatar

It’s actually one of his few attempts at policy that I agree with, just not the “exemptions” part.

As someone that works in engineering and has had relatively stagnant pay in my 10 Year career , H1B visas absolutely contribute to the poor wages and career prospects in engineering in the US. Why would someone in the US want to major in engineering when they’ll compete with people in India that will work for less?

If I knew this, I would have stayed the fuck out of engineering in college.

The problem is Trump’s using this as bluster and as negotiating tactic just like he did with tariffs and he will probably exempt India and China. He doesn’t give a fuck about restoring STEM in this country to American citizens. He just wants to look like the “tough dealmaker” that his supporters thinks he is while he bends over and takes it up the ass from big tech.

  110. saustin66 Avatar

Sounds like another trumpy call for bribes

  111. ImprovementFar5054 Avatar

It’s pay to play, like the rest of his kleptocracy

  112. MattVideoHD Avatar

It’s a classic strategy of corrupt, authoritarian kleptocracies just like tariffs. You put up potentially crushing restrictions on business and then selectively give breaks to your political allies, friends and family, and corporations willing to pay to play and comply, which crushes their competition and enables pro-government monopolies to thrive.
