So me (25M) and a coworker (22M) we are quite close colleagues and we could be considered as some of the best in the team. In our office phones are not allowed (not even in pockets, and the result if they catch you is firing) and when we do overtime there is no manager on the floor. So he is playing mobile games all the time and does not work. Our desks are next to each other and I am afraid that if he gets caught maybe I get in trouble as well. Also on a resent project that we had together I did 95% of the work because he is playing games.
WIBTA if my manager finds out regarding those 2 issues?

You will get in more trouble if your co-worker is caught, and they find out you knew he was doing it. Make a meeting with your manager and tell them tomorrow (or as soon as possible). Your co-worker is not only jeopardising his job, but yours as well.
INFO: Have you spoken to your coworker about this? YWBTA if you went straight to your manager without discussing it with him directly first (even though I know that can feel awkward)
Speak to him about this plus NTA
YWBTA unless you let him know its the last time he does this. His behaviour recently increased your workload. You are being used.
NTA. I’m a supervisor and we need to know about issues before they become problems. There’s also the appearance of you covering for them if you don’t tell your manager. You can talk to your co-worker first if you feel like it.
NTA – my general rule for “telling” on someone is if the answer is yes to the following question: are their actions affecting me more than just me being annoyed at the situation? (In this case you’re covering a large workload than you should and the potential for you to lose your job is high too, if your manager finds out you knew and didn’t say anything then at the very minimum they no longer trust you, at worst you also lose your job).
It would be entirely different if you weren’t being left to do the work yourself and there was no possibility of your own job being affected, but in this situation you do need to think of your own livelihood and the long term impacts on your own career if you were fired. Hope it all works out.
Ywbta.
Knowing such things is a managers job. As long as him playing games does not impede your work, it doesn’t concern you.
Also, how did he become “considered on of the best in the team”? If he does a good job even while playing games, then who gives a damn?
Yes you will be the Asshole. Talk to the Coworker directly. You will be the asshole since the manager won’t give a shit about any mitigating factors, and may also blame you since your team is not producing enough. I have been fired twice just after mentioning that a coworker of mine is insufficient. Managers want loyalty, they only care about laziness when it seriously affects the company bottom line.
Don’t do it, suck it up and deal, also use your lazy coworker as the clear minimum — do just a little more than they do so that you and he get your paycheck.
Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum
Nobody likes a snitch. If word gets out that you ratted him out (even he doesn’t get fired) other people will stay away from you.
You’re not the manager and not being paid to do their job. Manager should stay for overtime too then.
If you have an issue with the coworker address this with the coworker. Most important thing is that the work is done and that both contribute equally. As long as being on the phone doesn’t impede on productivity there is no problem.
It’s usually expected of staff to at least try and resolve it between themselves first. Your relationship with them will be far better off if you try talk to them about it.
I don’t want to say your the AH for this, they are for doing that to you every day. That’s far more annoying than a 15 min conversation they may have to have with their boss if you do decide to report it
YWBTA
You’re not there to be a spy for your boss and your boss absolutely will not return that loyalty to you.
I get that it’s annoying to see your coworker slacking off while you’re working but that’s a problem you can handle by talking with them and bringing that up. You can absolutely handle this without needing to bring your boss into it.
