I was shopping around our city’s yard sales yesterday and stopped to look through some clothes. While I was looking a guy walked up and asked the old lady running the sale if she had anything golf related. My ears perked up because I have just recently gotten into golf. The lady said she had her late husband’s clubs but didn’t know what they would be worth so she dragged them out to show the guy. It was obvious the guy knew golf by the way he took a couple practice swings and you could tell by his car and clothing he appeared to be well off. As he looked around the bag the lady was telling him that her husband had just passed and that she didn’t know if the clubs were worth anything. He said they weren’t that great and offered $200 for everything. She seemed hesitant and said she didn’t know and he just kind of talked over her and said “here I’ll go grab the money” and walked towards his car. I walked over to see what was in the bag and for anyone who knows golf I’ll throw this out there.
Almost new GT3 driver and 3 wood
Gently used mizuno Irons
Nice titlest wedges
A very nice looking Scotty putter
Great condition titelist cart bag
This stuff combined would be a steal at 1k.
Obviously this ladies late husband had spent a good penny on the clubs and I felt bad for her so I told her she should pass on that guys offer and have someone at a local course’s pro shop help her price the stuff out to sell if she wanted. She seemed totally shocked when I told her the driver and 3 wood were probably worth 800 alone. When the guy came back he was glaring at me and when he tried to hand the lady the cash she said no thanks and that she was going to get the stuff appraised. He got upset and told her she can’t back out of a deal so I chimed in that they didn’t really make a deal. He got pissed at me and told me I needed mind my business. The lady then told him she wasn’t interested again and to please leave. He walked to the e d of the driveway and just stood there angry like my toddler would. Before he walked away he called me an asshole and stomped off.
The whole thing was more funny than anything to me.
I was telling this story to my coworkers today and they were all dogging on me saying I should have kept my mouth shut and let the guy get the good deal but it felt wrong letting him rip her off. So am I the asshole here?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I don’t think I’m the asshole for telling a guy he shouldn’t rip off an old woman for some expensive golf clubs.

NTA Dude was trying to scam a widow.
Sometimes it’s okay to be a Buttinski. This was one of those times and you’re NTA.
NTA
That man had no integrity. You did. Good job.
NTA- anyone in the process of scamming a little old lady, deserves to be interfered with.
NTA. Rich dude had the money. Just didn’t want to spend it and happy to screw a recently bereaved woman to do it. You just called out basic indecency. I’m sure he’ll get other opportunities to be a dick and will take advantage of them.
NTA she was a vulnerable older lady being pushed into a unfavourable and unfair sale amount. The guy was pissed you didn’t allow him to take advantage of her.
NTA. And if I could give an award I would!!
You did the lady a solid. She is obviously selling to get some extra cash and this dude was trying to get one over on her. Likely HE was not going to use them to play but instead would have sold them himself.
Karma will reward you and bite him in the butt, hopefully.
NTA You saved her from getting ripped off. The guy was just ticked that he didn’t get a steal like he thought, and your co-workers showed their true colors by approving of the guy’s actions.
NTA.
She didn’t have the clubs sitting out for sale with a $200 price tag. I think that would have been different.
She wasn’t ready to sell them bc she didn’t know what they were worth and HE set the price. It doesn’t sound like she even agreed to it.
Good for you, OP!
NTA. Your coworkers are crappy people.
“I was telling this story to my coworkers today and they were all dogging on me saying I should have kept my mouth shut and let the guy get the good deal . . .”
You work with people who would support a guy ripping off a widow?? Who expressed disappointment that you didn’t let it happen?? Why do you ever speak to these people?! (Are these even people??)
Fer the love o’ Fuck.
Lemme tell you something—her husband literally torpedoed back to this world through you to stop that shit from happening.
NTA.
NTA you did a wonderful thing
So you bought the clubs right since it was going to be such a steal at 1k?
Right?
How are they have you played a few rounds with them so far?
You are amazing NTA
NTA. Good on you.
A post that actually made me happy. So glad you helped that lady!
How one views this story depends on who one identifies with more.
If you see yourself as the seller, you are trying to make the most you can on each item.
If you see yourself as the buyer, you are looking for deals. No one is going to garage sales trying to pay people what their items are worth. They go for bargains. The bigger the bargain the better.
You put values on those clubs at much higher than he was looking to pay. Is your valuation retail? Or what you think she could legitimately sell it for to another garage sale customer? I can’t imagine too many people are coming to a garage sale with $800+ to spend. Would the pawn shop pay those prices?
Nice bunch you work with there – they’d actually cheer on screwing over an old widow.
I highly doubt he needed clubs. He was going to flip them and you killed his day.
NTA, but your co-workers are.
NTA I would have done similar.
NTA.
You saved a widow from getting ripped off. He literally lied to her.
NTA, depending on POV. You’re definitely TA to that guy.
I bought a nice pair of Brunton field glasses on a garage sale one day. At least $300 retail, got them with the case for $5. The lady having the sale said her husband had a girlfriend from work, so she was having a sale while he was on a “business trip.” I didn’t feel bad at all.
NTA! Good Samaritan.
NTA. fk gary v
NTA
You saved the old lady from getting ripped off. Your coworkers are as bad as the toddler.
You did the right thing helping this widow not get taken for a ride.
Her late husband thanks you too. Even though he probably told her they cost $200. 😂😂
Appreciate you, Wish more people would help others especially those grieving, it’s hard enough already.
Coworkers are Big AH, but you All Star
The value is what someone will pay at a particular place and time. BTW, retail prices do not apply under such circumstances. Nor do returns, warranties, professional advice and other services that a retail golf shop offers. Does the seller have the interest, means and time to properly chase those prices? Maybe she does and maybe she doesn’t. Garage sales have two major factors: everything clears out in the one or two days scheduled AND items are priced to do so. The effort and thought that go into such sales are minimal. That’s all for a reason. You’re NTA, but in the end, you may have left her with those clubs just sitting in the corner of the garage.
NTA
I was ready to say “YTA” because I figured there was a price tag, but i changed my mind. The guy was trying to rip her off and she did not know enough to judge what she was doing. This is fair.
Nta
Rich people are the worst dude. You are NTA, nice work.
I’m so glad people are unanimously saying NTA, I was worried the hyper-unempathetic “you don’t owe anyone anything” crowd you sometimes get here were gonna jump in first.
You of COURSE did the right thing, OP, and don’t let anyone tell you differently. If they do, THEY are the assholes.
NTA – Everyone has a moral duty to prevent those who have no integrity from making such a shitty deal as that. I’d have done the same.
Your such a good person, he was clearly an a**hole
NTA a good deal is win win, not take advantage of a widow.
So you’re supposed to let a poor widow be tricked? You didn’t force her to make any choice, you gave her options. and did the right thing.
You work with horrible people. You are good person. NTA
I’m leaning NTA. Sucks for that guy but he was also trying to take advantage of her. As long as you didn’t do this just so you could buy them
You helped a sad old lady not get bulled into being ripped off, that’s a great thing! NTA!!
You could have asked him if he paid for his nice car by ripping off elderly widows. NTA
NTA but your coworkers are.
NTA. Your coworkers are nuts. Why in the world would you help the guy trying to rip off a recent widow?
Thanks man, I’d hope someone like you would step in if that were my mother. that guy has bad morals and you should remember that little fact that your coworkers SHARE these bad morals – careful what you say and do around them, they would clearly do what’s best for them even if it’s the wrong thing to do.
NTA for sure.
He actively lied and tried to swindle her and was pushy to try close the “deal” to take advantage of her confusion/ignorance/kindness/grief.
Finding amazing values at garage or estate sales is a thing, but there’s a significant difference between the owner pricing something incorrectly themselves vs someone lying to the owner about the value of an item and setting the price themselves and rushing the deal.
It’s not much different than a slimy used car salesmen pressuring someone to buy a car with known but undisclosed problems for too much money.
Anyone that thinks taking advantage of a widow is ok would be TA.
You work with a bunch of assholes who you should immediately distance yourself from.
Who encourages scamming a grieving widow the monsters. NTA. Fucking cowards.
