Hospital Employee/Friend Issue

Looking to get some opinions on the actions of a friend and who is a hospital employee where my wife is being treated.

My wife (39/F) was taken by ambulance from her apartment (we are in the early stages of separating). I found her semi-responsive due to poor management of a chronic illness.

We initially arrived at the Emergency Department and she was then moved to the ICU for a minimum of 3 days (possibly 4), the ICU is a pretty restrictive place and you need a patient name, room number and patient number to be admitted.

I was the only person given those details.

I brought my wife her phone and some clothes in bag when I initially arrived (under the advice of the paramedics). For the first 48 hours my wife had no idea where she was and could barely put together 2-3 words – nothing resembling a full sentence.

She has a business and I was helping by giving folks access to the space and taking care of her/our dog, so I was coming and going quite frequently.

I did notify 2 close friends and shared the patient info with them when they arrived. They only stopped by because they were leaving the state for a few days and wanted to check in before heading out. She was asleep and not coherent when they came, so they only stayed a few minutes and left (I have confirmed with them that they shared my wife’s patient info with no one).

I left for a few hours to tend to my business and take care of the dog once more and, then I randomly get a call from a mutual friend saying “I just left from my visit with your wife…please let me know if you need anything”

I declined her help and asked her not to tell anyone, to which she responds that she told 2 additional folks (her husband and another mutual friend).

I did not provide her with my wife’s patient info. My wife also did not provide her patient info to this person. I asked the duty nurse how this person had gained entry and she said “ask the front desk, we don’t control access…” I then went to the front desk and asked and she said “a woman did buzz herself in dressed in street clothes, and she thought it was weird…”

So basically this hospital employee gained access using her position as an employee and then learned about my wife’s condition and shared it with others.

I’m pretty upset about the situation…what are my options here?

I work in a hospital and there’s this EXACT scenario listed as a massive HIPAA violation. Report it.
