AITA for only writing down my name on a group project?

r/

For context, each start of the school year we have to do both exams and group projects to determine what knowledge we have in case anyone needs to go to supplementary lessons. And I had such a group project for physics class (physics is a very important subject in my major).

Sadly I was assigned to a really lazy group. I made a groupchat and added them all so we could discuss everyone’s roles and the subject they would be researching, we had one week to do the project. However, no one responded after the inital messages (I was left on seen). I tried talking to them at school but got brushed off because they would “get to it”. They never did.

Fast forward to the last day before the deadline, seeing no one was willing to do their job I had to rush all of the parts they were responsible for. In the end I only put my name on the credits and sent it in. And today I was contacted by some of them because apparently the teachers filled in our report cards with the grades we got and they had 3s (I think that’s a D- in other grading systems) and they were PISSED.

On one side, I feel like they did not deserve to be credited because they didn’t contribute to the project at ALL, but at the same time I do feel responsible for being the reason their grade was lowered significantly. So AITA??

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

    > I didn’t put my classmates’ names on a project on purpose because I was petty and pissed at them for refusing to help. The reaso that might make me an asshole is because their grades were lowered significantly for “not” handing in the project and they’d have to do supplementary lessons after school that’d take their time and possibly lower their final grade for the year.

They did absolutely zero work and expected credit? NTA

    Absolutely NTA.

You put the effort in, even organized the group chat. They did nothing. You need not feel guilty that they got the grade they did.

I’d say the next time you have a group project avoid them and make sure the group meets in person.

If you did all the work, you deserve all the praise. NTA.

NTA. Their grades got lowered because they didn’t do the assignment, NOT because of you. Maybe next time they will do their parts.

Hell no anyone w any self respect would have left their names out

If they did no work, they get no credit.

It’s that simple – anything else is them expecting to freeload off your work.

    You did nothing wrong.

    NTA.

Aaaaaand that is why I always hated group projects when I was a student. They are a free ride for the lazy and/or incompetent.

The justification given by academics is “Group projects teach you how to get along with and work productively with other people.”

Utter bullshit. In more than four decades in the workforce, being part of teams, even leading teams, nothing I ever learned as part of a student group project has helped me even the slightest.

And that’s because in a paid job, if you don’t pull your weight in the group, there are consequences. You shape up, or you have some explaining to do to the team leader or manager. You risk finding yourself out of the team and maybe even out of a job.

In a student project, all too often there are no consequences.

Telling the truth about your fellow students’ lack of effort, knowing it will result in a failed grade for them, is about the only weapon you have for dealing with the lazy.

So you used it. Nothing wrong with that.

    NTA.

BTW, academics, we see through you. Everyone knows that the real reason you’re all so fond of group projects is that if you have forty students in a class, you don’t want to have to mark forty assignments. You’d rather mark only twenty, or even ten.
