As far as we’ve seen, new toys seem to just start out believing they are exactly as they’re marketed kinda like a factory new mode. It’s only after they spend time processing their existence with the help of others to understand they are toys. When everyone meets Buzz for the first time, it pretty sure they say something like “Oh boy, gonna be one of these cases again”, and it just took longer for Buzz to realize it

It was an attempt by the manufacturer to make them more indistinguishable from humans. They gave the Lightyears memories.

That plus the arm-laser would make them dangerous, so as a fail safe they also got four year lifespans.

I think that one has a canonical answer. Buzz thinks that because he has an overly complex backstory, while other toys are just potatoes with eyes or dinosaurs. But Woody has a whole tv show about him, and he doesn’t believe that he’s a real cowboy, so this confuses me.

    They are built different.
