I abandoned my kitchen for two years in my stay-away flat. I already did the cleaning and used the ceramics plates and cups, a few steal utensils. All the untensils were dry but some steal untensils with slight rust
Here’s what I did:
-
Washed them with dishsoap and water, rinsed.
-
Poured dishshop alll over the utensils, fill them water and let it sit for hours. Drenched the spoons in soapy water cup. Let them sit for a while and washed them
-
Dried and washed them again whenever I wanted to use anything.
The rust was washed away atleast from my eye
But there’s an odd smell from the steal untensils, doesn’t seem concerning to me, I don’t remember how they smelt when I first brought them but smells like either something new or some chemical that didn’t wash off.
Is there any additional thing I should do to take care? Is the smell something to be concerned about?
(It was a long long leave from my flat’s kitchen, mostly became a crashout place from my parent’s home. The kitchen was very dusty, filled with empty water bottles, packed trash, dry waste and a dried dead gecko ;-; lowkey became a garage or a dumping place.
Decided to restore the kitchen and start cooking for myself)

Congratulations on starting the process to make your space livable again. You’ve done a lot. Good job !
Steel utensils are usually made of stainless steel. Which does rust, just… slowly.
What you need to do is sanitize the heck out of the sink and surfaces in the kitchen. Bleach based sprays and scrubby pads do a good job of getting dormant bacteria and mold spores. Be brutal. Go over it all several times.
For your utensils, a soak in a bleach and soap solution and then a hard scrub with a scrubby pad and hot water and dish soap will do a good job. And ultimately… if they smell strangely… well, utensils are not expensive. Thrift stores usually stock everything (but clean them before you use them).
And then set your schedules so you keep your kitchen clean. Every day. Clean before cooking. Clean after cooking. Your stomach will thank you.
I have used dishes and utensils from yard sales and even some I found digging in dumps for old bottles years ago. Wash them and disinfect them and you will be fine. Nonporous materials like stainless steel and ceramics are your friend.
Bleach or boiling water my friend. A brillo pad/steal wool will also get rid of the rust. It’ll be fine! Great job making it nice.
