what where some commercials that where controversial in your country?

r/

i don’t remember any commercial i have watched that was controversial, but i sure do remember one for duracell that weirded me out, in it the television was passing a television documentary with two elephants mating, and the whole family starting to get uncomfortable, but the remote is getting out of battery, but they use duracell to get out of the situation. https://youtu.be/GTQszb-sotI?si=5jV0ysmJ6DhJE6ug if you think i am lying. I’ve also heard about controversial commercials on the internet but never saw them myself here are some examples:

https://youtu.be/7V6PQHYuuDk?si=Zvq0hrZRY-XDI2VD due to jesus claiming that he was not walking over the water due to a miracle but due to there being rocks under it, it was considered offensive and banned.

https://youtu.be/goIMdh-z0RE?si=p3daYHLD3EXD-067 this commercial might give an inccentive for children to break or ruin their current shoes so they can get the one advertised in the commercial.

https://youtu.be/jAJIdC9YRmk?si=51MifLh5whS7CqHh this turtle looked way too childish, it would not be a problem if it was not advertising beer, something that children should not even THINK about drinking

what are some examples from your country?

For Dos Equis commercials it was that they changed “The most interesting man in the world” from a Scandivian looking silver fox to a Mediterranean looking guy who could be a stunt double for Michele Morrone.

I remember two things, both involving kids:

First, toy commercials. They were everywhere and parents were really tired of their kids constantly asking them to buy toys, so parents had a law created where there couldn’t be toy ads until late at night, after kids were in bed.

Second… this abomination which is somehow an “ad” (technically more like a PSA) from an amputee organization. That did play during children’s cartoons and kids were pretty weirded out.

Idk if it was controversial at the time, but this commercial was a bit tone-deaf

Man i fucking hate religious people that just spam their shit lol.

“Dime Vaquero” was a part of a Doritos marketing campaign with the slogan basically being about sharing stuff. The whole ad is about a girl getting sexually harrased by every man in the city because her bf leaked her having sex(thus the whole “so good you gotta share it” slogan). It wasn’t super talked probably because it was inmediatly pulled, discussion only reallu started until tiktok. https://youtu.be/ibIsTyTXcJk?si=6QBul6PkJiG8JkZs

Niños incomodos was a an ad about the reality of Mexico for the 2012 elections and . It was supressed because “bad taste” and “think of children”. https://youtu.be/mnH7LxqEH84?si=OsZd1X9ayV0rWnce

Here in MX: a terrible Coca Cola ad with some rich white teenagers visiting an Indigenous town at Christmas to hand out lots of Coca Cola and a big plastic tree, to supposedly help overcome racism (whut??).

This was really badly received because Mexican indigenous towns are swamped in Coca Cola in real life (I guess the highest consumption in the world) and people are getting diabetes + messed up teeth. You can see the ad here, it’s insane: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZHA0MwDL0Q

Another one was for Indio beer- bunch of very white people shown wearing t-shirts that said Orgullosamente Indio (with Pinche Indio crossed out)…so people were like, whyyy did you limit the casting call to blond people, for this ad about being proudly Indigenous. See the ad here: https://www.milenio.com/virales/critican-en-redes-nueva-campana-de-cerveza-indio

Not controversial per se, but there is an ongoing discussion of how Toña’s marketing strategy is basically correlating the act of drinking their beer to Nicaraguan culture because their most famous commercial has a song that says stuff like “If I died and had to rebirth, I wouldn’t be born somewhere else” and finishes this homage to Nicaragua saying “like my land, there aren’t two; like my toña there’s none” while showing people who (tbh) look well of economically, giving it this sense of aspirationism that includes drinking their beer.

Is quite a complex topic because we are known for our rum but also during the 2018 crisis we slowly started noticing how people turn to substance abuse to cope with the context we live in. Long story short the issue is with using Nicaraguan culture to promote the act of drinking.
