I originally joined reddit as an alternative to Digg back in 2008, right after Digg had made some major changes that fundamentally changed how we used the site. Actually, I think I had signed up for reddit prior to that, but didn’t make the real switch until the Digg migration. Does anyone else remember Digg?
I liked the idea of lots of subs/communities dedicated to my interests. I think that’s awesome. It’s a good way to get further educated in your interests, you may also find other ones.
And I like that you can share your opinions, thoughts but also hear the opinions of others that may not be the same. And hopefully (and I’d say in most cases) be civil about it.
It doesn’t have to be an echo chamber, that’s entirely down to the user.
I’ve never been on FB, tik tok, Twitter, YouTube, instagram, or anything else remotely social media. Stumbled upon this about 10 months ago. At first, I found it horrifying as well as fascinating, how some people think. I live in a very rare and privileged bubble. Eventually, I had to mute anything remotely political. Now I enjoy exchanging ideas about retirement, cruises, travel, etc. Mundane stuff.
After trying Instagram, Facebook, Threads and even Tik Tok I wanted a social network where I could learn with others and add value with my comments. Here, the feeling of community is unrivalled when compared to the other social media.
Looking for information on Google, nothing I found was correct. Someone suggested <search phrase> then add reddit. Got what I needed in like 2 minutes. Only recently started just browsing it.
My earliest memory of reddit was the 2008 election so probably joined to respond to some comment about that. There’s an equal chance I joined to participate in r/Aww or r/wow tho. I will never know for sure because I’m like a dozen banned accounts in at this point. Nothing I’m proud of but I too was an angsty and spicy teen at one point.
Fed up of dumb social media, and found something true in there. Sincerely hope it will stay like that the most possible. Also, the fact to be anonymous is super important.
Initial joined for reasons I’m not sure of- hardly ever used it for over a year. Then Karen Read happened and I’m all in, all the time -for lots of topics.
I joined to take a break from Twitter(X) & Facebook. Have uninstalled those apps from my phone. Now, only use Reddit on my laptop. Phone only has Whatsapp. Nothing else.
I was thinking of what I thought was going to be a new platform for social media… my vision turned out to be very similar to Reddit so that venture has stopped 😉🤭 and I just joined here instead.
i hate my work environment and Reddit has been offering me a bit of a break.
context:
For so long, I’ve been suppressing my emotions for people who took advantage of me, particularly in my work environment. Now, it feels like everything is resurfacing, and I’m crying uncontrollably as though it just happened. I can’t help but resent the fact that I wasn’t able to acknowledge my emotions or carve out the space I desperately needed back then. The lack of respect for personal space from others only makes it harder to heal.
Depressed, ptsd, facebook being a sole social outlet, but was hurting my mental health more, my son put reddit on my phone, and showed me how it works and said please use reddit, it’s so much better than fakebook and i haven’t used facebook since, and my mental health has improved along with other reasons
I was watching a video on shower thoughts and wanted to hear more. So when I found out that the YouTuber I was watching found them all on Reddit, that’s when I started to look it up and join r/ShowerThoughts
I remember seeing these advice animal memes floating around the internet; this was many years ago. I thought they were funny; I eventually found my way to where they were created, Reddit. Reddit had other things I liked (better D&D content than FB or other sites). Now I am trapped here as the internet slowly degrades; it sees to be one of the only islands pushing back against the pending takeover of AI. We know it is a losing battle, as the bots fill the comment sections and post garbage posts.
Anytime I googled a question on DIY projects , I would get a 10 min youtube video , or a reddit thread . YouTube is good step by step but reddit gave me quicker answers.
Meta locked me out of all my accounts. I went through the review process and didn’t pass. They never told me why my IG account went against their community standards. I post pictures of my dogs and that’s it.
Anyway, I like this platform better. I’m on Bluesky as well, but I don’t really like it as much.

I have no idea
You’re the reason I joined Reddit
On TikTok people were reading things said in here. I needed a good laugh and now it out of boredom.

Because Digg introduced a radically horrible UI and functionality change, which forced more than half its users over here.
Google searches kept turning up Reddit links with usable information, so I figured I’d check it out.
Anytime I googled a question on DIY projects , I would get a 10 min youtube video , or a reddit thread . YouTube is good step by step but reddit gave me quicker answers.
The great Digg migration.
Came to discuss random topics, stayed for the horny side of reddit ahh
4chan doesn’t have a good moblie app. And arguing with people with the same user name is confusing. They may have fixed the last issue.
Every time I google a question Reddit pops up first

I thought it was a lot like DIGG but not as polished and much different content. Then DIGG got sold and just left with reddit.
