When Did You Realize You Needed to Start Taking Better Care of Yourself?

r/

For me, it hit when I realized I was needing a nap after every workout just to feel normal. 😂

I used to think that 30 was the age where everything started going downhill, but now I’m realizing that it’s more about how you take care of yourself to keep things from getting worse.

When did you first realize that you couldn’t just keep ignoring your health? Maybe you noticed your metabolism slowing down or you started getting back pain after sitting for too long.

I know we all hear about the importance of eating right and exercising, but what’s something you wish someone had told you about staying healthy as you get older?

Lower back pain and when my fat pants (36’s) got too tight.

I’m comfortably back in 34’s and back pain is managed decently well.

That if you don’t do strength training as a man, your testosterone levels will decrease and once they slide, it’s harder to get them back up. Testosterone affects your mood and energy so you literally could lazy yourself into depression

I weighed in at the doctor, and saw a number like 25 lbs heavier than the heaviest I had ever been. Kinda realized my lower energy and crummy mental health were exacerbated by that.

When I started wearing size 38 waist pants and realized I was having major energy slumps mid-day.

This was after a few years of long hours in a sales job where I spent far too much time stuck in a car, then in meetings, then taking people out for lunches and dinners. Not only was I not eating for optimal health, but I also stopped working out.

I went on a low carb diet, started lifting weights, and within 4 months had dropped back to a 34 and the mid-day slumps were gone.

What I wish someone had told me (and I had listened to – that’s 90% of the battle when you get advice) is that it’s far easier to develop and maintain healthy habits – and stay fit – than it is to have to compensate and correct later.

Additionally, “later” may never come if you manage to develop a problem due to your negligence.

In other words – your body is a sacred temple – treat it as such and you’ll be a lot happier and healthier.

When 1/4 of my salary was drinking, went from 78 to 89kg, couldent put on regular pants or sleep on my back. I was 28 and depression was a bitch

I guess it really started in my early 30s. Playing rec league soccer was a huge motivator that I need to stop caring about muscle and lose like 60 pounds for pain, longevity, just overall happiness.

I’m doing okay, I’ve lost 20, but it’s been painfully slow, I have my habits established, Craft beer, which was a huge problem is now out of my life, now I just need to focus on discipline and consistency

At 30 or so, because I was getting out of shape due to lifestyle creep that I incorrectly associated to a slowing metabolism. Once I got my diet right, my energy came back as did my metabolism. I turn 40 this year and I’m in the best shape of my life.

It’s not about extreme diets or crazy workouts; it’s about finding sustainable habits that you can maintain long-term.

When I was running around in the backyard with my kids and I couldn’t even keep up with them. Hit me like a ton of fucking bricks.

I realized it a long time ago, but have yet to take any serious steps to get started. Procrastination is a disease. I do eat two servings of baby spinach a day so that’s something I guess.

I was 14, and heard that my cool older cousin ran 6km around town every week. I decided I should get in shape too. I’ve been on top of staying fit and healthy ever since.
