This Woman Cancelled a $12,000 Check for Her Friend’s IVF After Finding Out She Was Being Mocked Behind Her Back and the Drama is Absolute Insanity

We have all had those moments where we realize a “friend” isn’t exactly who they pretend to be to our face, but one woman on Reddit just lived through the ultimate betrayal involving a massive sum of money and a very personal wound. Imagine being 35, struggling with infertility, and going through a painful divorce only to have your ex-husband immediately start a new family with someone else. Now imagine that your closest friend—the one person you thought truly understood your pain—asks you for twelve thousand dollars to fund her own IVF journey, only to turn around and use your life story as a “cautionary tale” to a mutual friend. If you have ever wanted to witness the exact moment a bridge gets burned with a $12,000 match, this story is for you.

The Original Poster (OP) has been through the absolute wringer. After years of failed fertility treatments, her husband left her, remarried a younger woman, and is now expecting his second child with his new wife. It is the kind of situation that “hurts like h£ll,” and the OP has leaned heavily on her friend Alessia, who is also struggling to conceive. When Alessia asked for help paying for her next IVF cycle, the OP didn’t just offer a shoulder to cry on; she wrote a check for $12,000 with no strings attached. She genuinely wanted her friend to have the miracle she couldn’t have herself.

But the ink on that check wasn’t even dry before the universe decided to reveal Alessia’s true colors. A mutual friend named Carol sent the OP a screenshot of a text conversation she’d just had with Alessia. In the messages, Alessia was talking about her upcoming IVF cycle and said she hoped it worked because she didn’t want to end up like the OP—divorced, alone at 35, and watching an ex-husband have a family with a younger woman. It is a level of cruelty that is honestly hard to process, especially considering she had just taken a five-figure gift from the very woman she was mocking.

The OP didn’t wait for an explanation; she went straight to her bank and cancelled the check. When Alessia realized the money was gone, she went b!tsh!t. Her excuse for the text? She claimed it was just an “inside joke” between “desperate infertile women.” Let’s be real for a second: calling someone’s deepest trauma an “inside joke” while your hand is still in their pocket for twelve thousand dollars is a level of audacity that belongs in a museum. It is a total ahole move to judge the person who is literally financing your dreams.

The drama only escalated from there. Alessia and her husband actually showed up at the OP’s house to beg for another check. When the OP refused, the husband started lecturing her about being “supportive.” He even had the nerve to call Carol a “toxic snake” for exposing the truth, rather than holding his own wife accountable for her sh!t-show of a mouth. They are now pressuring the OP, claiming they can’t go through with the IVF cycle because she “took the money back.” Newsflash: it was never their money to begin with!

The emotional commentary here is a mix of heartbreak and pure rage. Infertility is a lonely, devastating road, and the OP thought she had found a sister in the struggle. To find out that your “friend” views your life as a tragedy to be avoided—and uses it as gossip material—is a k!ller blow to a fifteen-year friendship. The OP is now being told by some friends that she is “oversensitive,” but honestly, who wouldn’t be offended by their misfortune being turned into a punchline?

It is total bullsh!t to expect someone to fund a life they were just mocked for not having. Alessia didn’t just make a “joke”; she revealed that she looks down on the OP. She sees the OP as a failure and is terrified of becoming her. You don’t get to take someone’s money while simultaneously using them as a “what not to do” example. It is a haughty b!tch move to think you’re entitled to $12,000 after proving you aren’t actually a friend.

The husband’s involvement makes the situation even more exhausting. By reminding the OP of the IVF cycle dates, he is trying to use guilt as a weapon. He wants the OP to feel responsible for their potential child not being born, which is a massive manipulation tactic. The OP didn’t “take” anything from them; she simply decided not to give a massive gift to someone who doesn’t respect her. The fact that they are calling Carol the “snake” instead of apologizing to the OP says everything we need to know about their character.

Carol, on the other hand, is a real one. She saw her friend being disrespected and made sure she knew the truth before $12,000 of her hard-earned money went to someone who was laughing at her behind her back. If telling the truth makes her a “snake,” then we need more snakes in the world. The OP shouldn’t feel bad about protecting her peace and her bank account from people who don’t value her.

This story is a vital reminder that “no strings attached” doesn’t mean “no respect required.” A gift of that size is an act of extreme love and trust, and Alessia broke that trust before the check even cleared. The OP might be sad about the loss of a long-term friendship, but a friend who talks about you like that isn’t a friend you want to keep. It’s a sh!t-show of a situation, but the OP is the only one in it with her dignity intact.

So, is she the ahole? Absolutely not. She is a woman who realized she was being used and took her power back. Alessia can go to hell with her “inside jokes” and find another way to pay for her treatments. We hope the OP finds new friends who actually appreciate her generosity and understand that her life is not a cautionary tale for their entertainment.

What would you do if you found out your friend was mocking you after you gave them a huge gift? Is $12,000 “too much” to take back over a “joke,” or did Alessia get exactly what she deserved? Let us know in the comments if you’re Team OP or if you think she should have just let the check go through!

She was 100% right in cancelling that check and feeling crappy for what that “friend” did and said! She made a joke out of this poor lady’s infertility ~ that’s such a sensitive topic! Close the door on that insensitive btch you, unfortunately, used to call a friend.

NTA, your friend however is. Whether joking or not you don’t make fun of someone else’s misfortun. Especially since this btch knows all to well what you are going through. Then has the audacity to make jokes about how she doesn’t want to end up divorced and childless like you. What an insensitive btch. Good for you for cancelling that check. So sorry you’re going through this.

I think I maybe would have done the same. Why don’t they foster or adopt ? I’ve heard dozens of stories how people that foster end up getting PG because they relax and quit obsessing on it . Also there are so many babies that need help.
