This Tow Truck Driver Stopped Picking Up His Sister From School Because She Said His Uniform Was Embarrassing, and Now She is Riding the Bus

We all remember being sixteen years old. It is a time when your hormones are raging, your skin is acting up, and literally everything your family does is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened in the history of the world. Your mom breathing too loudly? Mortifying. Your dad trying to use slang? devastating. But there is a line between standard teenage angst and straight-up entitlement, and one younger sister on Reddit just sprinted across that line like she was trying to win a gold medal in ungratefulness.

The OP (Original Poster) is a twenty-six-year-old man who works full-time for a police department as a tow truck operator. It is a solid, respectable job. He spends his days hauling seized vehicles and helping officers when their cruisers break down. But his second unpaid job is acting as a chauffeur for his sixteen-year-old sister, Emily, and her friends. For years, he has driven them home after school to save the parents from making the daily twenty-to-thirty-minute round trip.

Usually, having an older brother with a cool job and a car is a flex in high school. But recently, the police department updated their dress code for tow truck drivers. To increase safety and visibility on the road, the drivers were issued new uniforms that closely replicate what the actual police officers wear. It makes sense; if you look like authority, people slow down and don’t hit you. However, to Emily and her clique, this new look was apparently social suicide.

The drama started when the girls decided that being seen in a car with a guy in a pseudo-police uniform was simply too “cringe” to bear. Instead of just dealing with it or, you know, being grateful for the free ride in a warm car, they started demanding that the OP change his clothes every single day before picking them up. Imagine the audacity. You are getting a free door-to-door service, and you have the nerve to dictate the driver’s wardrobe?

The OP, being a reasonable adult with a life and a job, told them “no.” He explained that if they wanted a ride, they needed to suck it up. This is the correct response. He isn’t their personal butler; he is a tired worker doing a favor. But the teenagers didn’t take the hint. They complained to the OP’s parents, hoping to get the “manager” involved to force a wardrobe change.

Shockingly, the parents actually sided with the bratty teenagers. They tried to pressure the OP to cave to the girls’ demands to keep the peace. When he refused again—because seriously, who has time to change clothes just to drive some kids home?—it turned into a massive argument. So, the OP did the only logical thing: he went on strike. He decided to stop helping them altogether. If the uniform is so embarrassing, they don’t have to look at it anymore.

The consequences were swift and hilarious. Now, Emily and her friends have to take public transit, which takes an hour to get them home instead of the quick twenty-minute car ride. They went from a private chauffeur to sitting on a city bus, all because they couldn’t handle a beige shirt and a badge. It is a classic case of “play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

To make matters worse, the other parents are now furious. Why? Because they lost their free shuttle service. They are upset that their kids are inconvenienced, but nobody seems to be addressing the fact that their kids were rude enough to insult the person doing them a massive favor. They want the convenience of the OP’s labor without the “embarrassment” of his uniform.

So, is the OP the ahole? Absolutely not. Beggars cannot be choosers. If you are getting a free ride, you sit there, you say thank you, and you don’t comment on the driver’s attire. Emily learned a valuable lesson about biting the hand that feeds you, or in this case, the hand that drives you. Enjoy the bus, Emily.

What would you do if your sibling demanded you change clothes to do them a favor? Would you have caved, or would you have bought them a bus pass immediately? Let us know in the comments if you think the brother was too harsh or if the sister got exactly what she deserved!
