Having roommates is a total gamble. Sometimes you get a lifelong best friend who respects your space and shares the grocery bill. Other times you get a third roommate completely against your will because your buddy gets a new girlfriend. One guy on Reddit recently found himself dealing with a massive boundary invasion in his own home and his petty revenge is dividing the entire internet.
The Original Poster is a twenty one year old guy who has been living with his childhood best friend for two years. For the most part things were absolutely perfect between the two guys. They had a solid living arrangement and a great dynamic. That peace was completely shattered when the twenty two year old roommate got a new girlfriend.
The twenty three year old girlfriend actually seemed pretty great at first. The OP noted that they had a lot in common and he genuinely liked spending time with her. But there was one massive glaring issue that quickly turned the living situation into a nightmare. This woman had a complete and total aversion to knocking on doors.
She would constantly just barge right into the OP’s private bedroom without a single warning tap. Thankfully he was usually just chilling on his bed or studying at his desk so she never caught him doing anything untoward. But barging into a closed bedroom is a massive violation of privacy regardless of what the person is doing.
The invasions got incredibly specific and incredibly annoying. On at least seven separate occasions this woman barged into his room first thing in the morning just to ask if he wanted coffee. Seven times. To make matters worse the OP actually sleeps completely naked. Up until this point he had always been safely hidden under the covers when she decided to make her unannounced morning entrance.
The OP tried to use his words like a rational adult. He repeatedly pointed out to her that she easily could have seen him naked because she refuses to knock. Instead of apologizing and respecting his space she just giggled and said “but I didn’t.” It was incredibly dismissive and proved she had absolutely zero respect for his privacy in his own home.
Since words were not working the OP decided to take drastic measures. When she stayed over recently, he formulated a plan to finally make his point stick. He intentionally went to sleep completely naked right on top of his bed covers. He knew her routine and he knew exactly what was going to happen.
Sure enough seven in the morning rolls around and the girlfriend barges right through his door to ask about coffee. Except this time she was greeted by the full unfiltered view of the OP in all his glory. She saw his “you know what,” immediately backed out of the room, and refused to speak to him for the rest of the day.
You would think this would be the moment the girlfriend learns her lesson about knocking. Instead the roommate pulled the OP aside and accused him of being completely out of order. The best friend claimed the OP deliberately exposed himself and pointed out that he had “threatened” to do it before. The OP had merely warned them about the logical consequences of opening a closed door but the couple completely twisted his words.
Now the roommate and the girlfriend are running a full smear campaign. They are framing the OP to all their mutual friends as some sick creep who intentionally got naked and lay in wait for her. They are accusing him of doing it just to get a thrill. The OP is starting to feel guilty because he sees how his petty revenge could be misinterpreted by outsiders.
Let us be incredibly clear here. The OP is not the ahole. If you open a closed door in someone else’s house without knocking you are officially consenting to whatever you see on the other side. A bedroom is a private sanctuary. A person has every right to sleep naked on top of their own bed in their own room behind a closed door.
The girlfriend is a massive boundary stomper who played stupid games and won a very stupid prize.
