Wedding planning brings out the absolute worst in people. You expect arguments over the seating chart or the flavor of the cake. You might even expect some light drama over the floral arrangements. But you absolutely do not expect your future in laws to sit you down and ask you to fundamentally alter your genetic makeup for the wedding photos. One bride on Reddit recently shared the most bizarre and controlling wedding demand we have ever seen.
The Original Poster is a twenty eight year old woman who happens to have naturally very light gray blue eyes. It is a unique facial feature that people have commented on for her entire life. Some folks tell her that her eyes look striking, while others have described them as a little unnerving. Regardless of other people’s opinions, it is the face she was born with.
She never thought twice about her eye color until she got engaged to her thirty year old fiance. He comes from a very traditional family, which is usually code for a family that completely oversteps normal boundaries. As the wedding approached, her future mother in law decided it was the perfect time to critique the bride’s actual eyeballs.
The mother in law pulled the bride aside and kindly suggested that she wear colored contacts on her wedding day. The older woman claimed the bride’s icy eyes might look too intense in the professional photographs. She then suggested that a soft brown color would be much more elegant. Asking a woman to mask her natural eye color so she looks better in a photo album is a truly unhinged level of vanity.
The bride initially laughed the entire conversation off. She logically assumed it was just a really weird joke because nobody actually asks a bride to disguise her genetics for a party. But the joke quickly turned into a nightmare when her fiance actually brought the topic up again later.
Instead of defending his beautiful future wife, the groom completely folded. He told her that his family genuinely thinks it would look better if she went with a more warm and inviting look for their big day. Imagine looking into the eyes of the woman you love and telling her they are just not warm enough for your mother’s aesthetic preferences.
The bride immediately put her foot down and said absolutely not. She rightfully stated that she is not going to alter her natural appearance just to please his overbearing family. That should have been the end of the discussion.
But the groom decided to keep digging his own grave. He tried to gaslight her by saying it is not a big deal. He claimed he personally does not care either way, but he thinks she should just wear the brown contacts to keep the peace.
Let us have a serious talk about the phrase keeping the peace. In toxic families, keeping the peace just means bending over backwards to accommodate the most unreasonable person in the room so they do not throw a tantrum. The groom is actively asking his bride to erase a part of her identity just so his mom does not have to look at her icy gaze during the cake cutting.
Now the entire traditional family is treating the bride like she is being incredibly difficult over a minor detail. The fiance is frustrated that she is turning his mother’s insult into a massive argument. But the bride is completely correct when she says this is a huge deal. You should never have to change your physical body to make your in laws comfortable.
The internet is completely horrified by this family and their weird brown eye agenda. The bride is definitely not the bad guy here. If her fiance is already demanding she change her face to appease his mother, this marriage is going to be an absolute disaster. She does not need new contacts, she needs an entirely new groom.
