Retirement accounts invested in the stock market are immoral

r/

Private equity is destroying the American Dream, buying housing, businesses, healthcare and squeezing every penny from them

The average 401k has a diverse portfolio that puts its money into these companies

So when we complain about companies “only caring about stockholders” we’re talking about ourselves but we don’t even realize it

Private equity is not the stock market. The stock market is public equity.

almost all 401ks typically cannot invest in private equity. only pension funds, endowments, and sovereign wealth funds are typically private equity investors.

I wish Redditors would spend 5 minutes and learn how the things work before making posts like this.

At what point does this sub get renamed to r/uninformedopinions?

Everything listed on the stock market is public.

Not being listed on the market is literally the defining feature of a “private” entity.

If you ask me, the destruction of the Pension system and forcing everyone into the 401k was stupid because the entire 401k system is predicated on asset prices going up. No one seemed to plan for what happens if we ever enter a period where the asset prices don’t go up.
