Family dynamics are always complicated. Taking care of aging parents is a noble thing to do. But there is a massive difference between helping out your family and being actively scammed by them. One woman on Reddit recently shared the absolute wildest financial trap her stepdad tried to set for her. The sheer entitlement of this man will actually make your jaw drop.
The Original Poster and her husband are basically living the ultimate homesteading dream. They own their own home and are just five short years away from paying off their mortgage entirely. They have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into the property. Her husband flips houses for a living and personally pounded every single nail into their beautiful remodel and their barn. They also have a thriving mini farm complete with sheep, goats, pigs, bunnies, and tons of birds.
Things took a very dark and manipulative turn when her stepdad brought up his declining health. He has ALS and does not have long to live. He lives with the Original Poster’s mom in a double wide modular home on fifteen acres of land. He recently asked his stepdaughter to rent out her beautifully remodeled house and move onto his property to take care of her mother after he passes away.
The husband immediately and rightfully refused to become a landlord. Because he flips houses professionally, he knows exactly how tenants treat rental properties. He refused to let all of his hard work get completely trashed. Plus, managing a rental property while maintaining a massive fifteen acre farm for your mother sounds like an absolute nightmare.
If you thought simply abandoning a dream home was a big ask, the stepdad’s extra stipulations will make you furious. In order to do this massive favor for her mother, the Original Poster would have to completely get rid of her dog. She would also be fully responsible for paying the eight thousand dollar annual property taxes. Oh, and she would have to buy a brand new roof and install new siding on her own dime.
The absolute biggest red flag of this entire sh!tshow is the legal paperwork. The house is not even in the mother’s name. The stepdad actually willed the property to his own biological children. The step sister’s name is literally already on the deed. The Original Poster would be paying for a new roof, new siding, and massive property taxes on a house she has absolutely zero legal rights to.
Let us break down this terrible math. The Original Poster is being asked to abandon her almost paid off house, deal with the stress of renters, surrender her family dog, and dump tens of thousands of dollars into fixing up a double wide trailer. Then, the very minute her mother dies, the step siblings get to swoop in and sell the newly renovated property for pure profit while the Original Poster is left empty handed. It is a complete financial scam.
Despite this incredibly toxic setup, the couple actually offered a very generous compromise. Since they want more land for their animals anyway, they told the stepdad they would happily move in and take care of the mom on one condition. They wanted to officially buy the house. They offered to pay the full, legally appraised market value of two hundred and ninety thousand dollars.
Instead of being thrilled that his wife would be taken care of and his stepdaughter was offering a fair legal deal, the stepdad threw a massive tantrum. He arbitrarily decided the couple could not afford the house. When they assured him they had the funds, he randomly jacked the price up to half a million dollars. He demanded five hundred thousand dollars for a modular home just to be petty.
The Original Poster obviously walked away from the ridiculous deal, and now the stepdad is giving her the silent treatment. The cherry on top of this ridiculous story is the mother’s actual motivation. The Original Poster noted in an edit that her mom has plenty of money. She is not destitute. She simply just does not want to pay her own rent or mortgage anymore and wants a completely free ride funded by her daughter.

You cannot ask someone to fund your retirement plan while actively plotting to hand their investment over to your biological kids. The stepdad tried to use his illness to guilt trip his stepdaughter into free labor and free renovations. This couple needs to stay right where they are, cuddle their farm animals, and let the step siblings figure out how to put a new roof on their own inheritance.
