This Woman Accused Her Transgender Sister of Stealing Her Identity Because They Share a Middle Name and the Internet is Dragging Her

Sibling rivalries are completely normal, but some families take petty jealousy to a completely unhinged level. We all know that one sibling who desperately needs to be the main character in every single situation. But one twenty four year old transgender woman on Reddit recently shared a story about her younger sister that proves some people will literally gatekeep a dead relative’s name just to win an imaginary competition.

The Original Poster transitioned seven years ago and legally changed her name a few years later. The family dynamic is a little complicated. Her twenty two year old sister has apparently always struggled with the transition and the supposed burden it placed on her. When the younger sister was born, their parents gave her their late aunt’s name as her middle name. The aunt passed away when the Original Poster was only six years old, but her memory left a massive impact on the family.

The Original Poster actually had a deeply profound connection to this aunt. She was present with her mother when they got the call about the aunt’s sudden medical decline. She was literally in the room to hear her final words and comforted her grieving mother afterward. As she grew up, the family constantly compared the Original Poster to the late aunt. They were both incredibly bookish and prone to dark moods. The Original Poster even wrote poetry about her and inherited her old music collection. She always felt that if her aunt had survived, they would have understood each other on a level the rest of the family simply could not grasp.

Because the boys in their family traditionally shared middle names, the Original Poster thought it would be a beautiful gesture to adopt the same custom for the girls. When she was choosing her new legal name, she asked her mother for permission to take the aunt’s name as her middle name. The mother happily agreed. The only problem is that the Original Poster forgot to ask her younger sister for permission first.

When the younger sister found out about the new legal name, she completely flipped out. She violently accused her older sibling of stealing her name. The Original Poster never really understood the intense reaction, but she kept the name anyway. Fast forward to the present day, and the Original Poster is finally getting her short stories accepted for publication in magazines. Because she is a brilliant writer, she decided to use the aunt’s name as part of her professional pen name to honor the woman who also loved books but never got to live a full life.

Sharing this exciting career milestone triggered a second, even more ridiculous meltdown from the younger sister. The twenty two year old became furious and finally revealed her true underlying issue. She confessed that this entire time, she genuinely felt her older sister was usurping her identity as the only daughter in the family. She actually accused the Original Poster of intentionally stealing the specific things that made her feel special.

The sister’s logic is deeply flawed and incredibly selfish. She is not just mad about the shared middle name. She is also furious about the Original Poster’s first name. When the Original Poster chose her new first name, she picked the exact name their parents would have given her if she had been assigned female at birth. The younger sister claims this was technically her name too, since it was the parents’ backup choice when she was born. She is literally trying to claim ownership over a hypothetical backup name.

The Original Poster made it perfectly clear that she has absolutely zero desire to usurp her sister’s position as the eldest or only daughter. She knows her parents will never view her the exact same way they view their cisgender daughter, and she has no interest in competing for that specific title. She just wants to exist peacefully and honor a family member she loved.

To make matters worse, the younger sister has a documented history of being incredibly cruel. She constantly makes fun of the Original Poster’s appearance. She criticizes her chest, mocks her jewelry choices, and even laughs at the idea of her receiving male attention. Because of this relentless bullying, the Original Poster admits her default response to her sister’s critiques is usually just a solid f*ck you.

The internet swiftly rallied behind the Original Poster. Nobody has a legal or moral copyright on a dead relative’s name. Families reuse names constantly, and sharing a middle name does not magically erase someone else’s identity. The younger sister is clearly projecting her own deep seated insecurities onto a woman who is just trying to celebrate her writing career. The Original Poster needs to keep publishing her stories, use whatever pen name she wants, and let her sister deal with her main character syndrome in therapy.
