So, earlier, my friend and I were talking about some stuff, and when we feel passionate, we swear (which happens very rarely), but we always censor it (by censoring I mean miming the word, but not actually saying it). My other friend (her twin sister, who’ve I’ve known longer) found out about that and said that we should stop it, because cursing makes us look stupid. Is that true?
Does swearing make you look stupid?

How do you censor it? It’s weird to me if it’s really excessive but not sure how it makes you look stupid.
Not to me but everyone is different. To me it makes you sound more honest
not to anyone smart enough to pay attention to what you are saying rather than how you are saying it.
It’s case by case. There are plenty of ppl who don’t swear and are dumber then a pile of rocks.
If you’re censoring it, you’re not swearing. If anything, dropping a “mother fudger” comes off far worse than the alternative.
Studies show that smarter people swear more often. Not a golden rule.
Research shows that statistically, the majority of people view excessive swearing as a sign of low intelligence.
Take that as you will.
I personally don’t mind swearing, but if somebody has to use it in every 2nd sentence while talking, I admit that I don’t really want to talk to them very much anymore. It’s not because I’m against cursing, it definitely has a time and a place, but people with sailor talk absolutely give off an air of unintelligence.
fuck no
Yes, if you are using ‘fucking’ as your only pronoun. A limited vocabulary does make you sound less intelligent than you actually are.
Sometimes a swear word is the most appropriate word to use. As long as you’re using the best word, it doesn’t make you look stupid.
Take “bullshit” for example. There really aren’t many other words which express the exact same sentiment. “Nonsense” is too mild, so “bullshit” it is.
I’d say cursing, but not saying the word, makes one look stupid. Curse or don’t.
Depends on the usages. Calling things “shit” is one that strikes me as low brain power. “Let me get my shit”. “Retdd” is also low brain power for things that need explanation. “I won’t to that because it’s reded” or using cuss words to describe amazing things is showing a lack of creativity.
Not always. Overuse of a single word or a few words can make it seem that someone simply doesn’t have a vocabulary large enough to allow for variety and specificity in their speech. Frequent use of vulgarity can also be taken to be indicative of an uncouth upbringing or crude personality.
Unless you know you are in company that is tolerant or appreciative of such colorful language, it’s typically better to try to minimize the use and particularly the overuse of words and phrases that are typically considered distasteful.
In Poland, there are people who use kurwa as a comma, and that indeed makes them sound like troglodytes, but good, well timed kurwa is usually highly appreciated and doesn’t really measure your your inteligence.
Studies have shown that people who curse more tend to be more intelligent, so it’s quite the opposite. Anyone who thinks cursing is bad is kind of stupid.
The primary issue with cursing is that you can replace most words with curse words. This tends to stunt your language development and acquisition.
That being said, curse words are just words. There is no inherent reason to not curse, though there’s a time and place for everything. Intelligent people also curse when it’s appropriate, just they tend not to do so when as frequently. Nuanced use of diction allows you to more accurately convey your intended meaning.
When I used to teach test prep and would go over this concept, one of the examples I’d use was understanding the difference between abhor and loathe, and how using one over the other would more accurately convey your intent.
If they’re the only words you know or drop them repeatedly in the same conversation then yeah a little bit.
