I(18F) am a college student who is staying in her dorm over the summer but the unfortunate thing is; is that my current job doesn’t pay me enough to live. I make less than 400 a month, and can’t get any financial aid over the summer since im not enrolled in summer classes. I’ve been trying to keep my head high but as it stands right now, I only have $1.1K left in my bank account.
I’ve always grown up in a low income house and remember getting food bank groceries and always for some reason being super embarrassed about it, because my parents raised me with pride. I’m terrified to admit that I need help and need to use a food bank over the summer. I’ve been actively searching all week for jobs that will pay better and give me more hours but I’ve heard nothing back and it makes my heart ache and feel dull. I’m struggling to feel like I’m going to be okay.

Just remind yourself this is only temporary and you will repay what you needed in the future.
If you wouldn’t judge someone else for needing a food bank you shouldn’t judge yourself either. If one of your classmates told you they’re in the same boat you’d respond kindly, you deserve that same kindness. Anyone who’d shame you for keeping yourself from going hungry isn’t worth even thinking abt
Don’t be embarrassed! I know that’s easier said than done but honestly times are very hard for A LOT of folks right now.
You might want to look into food stamps as well. I work in social services and most days I process several apps from college kids. I’m in CA and (at least here) students do have a slightly different set of requirements but the guidelines for these programs are all public info and can be looked up online. 🙂
Seriously tho, don’t be ashamed and go get yourself something for your tummy.
You shouldn’t be embarrassed at all. I volunteer at a food bank in my neighborhood, and there are nurses and kids that attend johns hopkins univ. They come get food. There’s a man that drives a jag that stands in line. Food is expensive for everyone, so you are not alone. Keep ur head up one of those jobs will call you back.
You have no reason to be, we all need help from time-to-time. One day you’ll be able to help someone else when you’re better off. We’re human and need community and other people to survive.
As someone who regularly volunteers with distributing food from the food bank… the ONLY person judging you, is you. We are here to help! Go get something to eat and realize that we all need a hand sometimes. Then go do great things in the world and help make sure food banks are there in the future when others need them!
