Should we become less beholden to unions in order to oppose trumps tariffs

r/

One of the things I’m surprised at is how us dems are surprisingly acting nuanced on tariffs and not immediately denouncing them this most prevalent in progressives so the question I ponder is this should we as a party step away from unions (who themselves are becoming more right wing) and more focus on being more protectionist and banking off said protectionism
Also I’m not saying become anti union at all in fact whatsoever

Who is not denouncing them? Even if you think that tariffs can be an effective tool in some circumstances, what’s happening now is insane and doing irreparable damage to our economy.

    I’d follow Ilhan Omar’s example.

    >Nothing says “winning” like a $2.5 trillion market wipeout.
    >
    >If you have a retirement account, a small business, or just buy groceries, congratulations—you’re paying for Trump’s economic recklessness.
    >
    >Slapping tariffs on America’s biggest trading partners isn’t the genius economic strategy he claims.

Voters are largely a dumb group. So it’s best to be straightforward. You can worry about the nuance once Dems are back in power. Union members have been voting for Dems by the same 55-45 margin for the last few presidential elections (including 2024).

I think supporting unions themselves can reasonably take a backseat until we can actually encourage more people to join them.

Most people aren’t in a union and don’t imagine themselves that were joining a union. Many don’t want to. But since we have so many old people that use working class and unions like they are synonyms (Biden and Bernie are great examples) we message to working class people in a manner they can’t hear.

Unions having so much of a voice in the party are part of why we have a slow and wasteful process for getting things done in blue states.

Unions having so much of a voice in the party means we are stuck trying to fix education and policing while supporting groups that defend the worst abuses in both systems.

Move to a real working class message and if the unions come along, fine.

Wtf is the point of having a so called left of center party or calling yourself a “progressive” if you don’t give a shit about the working class? And just because this tariff policy is stupid doesn’t mean tariffs/protectionism cannot be used in a smart way.

Is this a bit? Unions protect the working class. The wealthy hate unions. Why do you think that is?

Biden cucked himself constantly to appease unions and got jack shit to show for it. Unions have beclowned themselves. I don’t think we need to openly denounce but we sure as shit do not need to suck them off all the time.

The teamsters union especially is a joke.

Tariffs are bad BECAUSE THEY HURT THE WORKING CLASS (amongst other reasons).

Abandoning the vehicle of working class empowerment is stupid
