The quality of people makes a significant difference but from what I observe, the larger the group is the more social capital is being calculated and hence, inauthenticity and superficial conversations are at play.

Small group is nice. 3-4 people max. Everyone gets the space to chat, and when the convo lulls between two people you can catch up with the other person. Plus I don’t have any more friends lol.
I have a lot of friends so multiple people hangouts. 3-4 is a really good size. I do a lot of tabletop gaming that’s essentially a 4-6 person hang.
A group of 4-5, including two extroverts who can carry the conversation
3-4 is perfect. Especially if it’s just the boys I went to school with, because it’s effortless and we can dip in and out of conversation without any expectation placed on each other
I tend to get quickly socially burned out meeting new people nowadays, which is a far cry from my previous life running pubs where I was your typical social butterfly that would end up at random parties or late night lock ins – I was probably insufferable..
I DO like meeting new people though, just as long as it’s not a forced expectation.. if I feel like the Queen saying “And what do you do?” then it’s clearly effort – which I can’t be arsed with. (Yes, I fully understand this is a “me” problem)
If I gel with a new person, we’re probably going to get along just fine without friction, but I’m too long in the tooth to be trying to start a fire with wet kindling
Either one-on-one or a close group. My usual suspects are a group of 3 (plus me) and it is fine.
3-4 ppl is good. I have been wanting to do some meetups but most are like 40-50 ppl…
One on one or three people. Four people starts feeling a little crowded and busy, up to eight people is barely controlled chaos and anything larger than that is intolerable and I want to leave as soon as possible.
I don’t have anyone to 1-1 with besides my wife, but hanging out with her friends in a group setting is fun lol.
I somehow forgot to make friends along the way.
I like hanging out by myself
